Steinert's Tavern

by Kurt R. » Mon May 05, 2008 9:24 am

Silver Street and Charlestown Road were closed this morning because of a "Fire" at Steinert's Tavern
This is a New Albany institution - hope they are able to recover!

Me too! For those who aren't familiar with Steinert's, Kevin Gibson wrote a nice piece about it for LEO and LouisvilleHotBytes back in October:

Sad but true people drove by this afternoon and talked to a couple of my friends that know the owners, the fire gutted the building and if they do reopen they will have to start from the ground up wish them only the best

From my vantage point this afternoon when I rolled by on my way home from work I would be shocked if that building isn't razed.

Steinert's Grill and Pub, a New Albany landmark that opened in the late 1800s, was heavily damaged by fire this morning. Reports say the fire broke out at about 4 a.m. and took hours to contain. As of 11 a.m. today, fire officials were deciding whether or not to tear down the structure.

According to Kevin's review "The notorious 1917 tornado destroyed one location - a photo reportedly still exists in New Albany’s city directory of Michael Steinert Jr. standing in front of a pile of rubble and glass that only a day before had been his thriving restaurant business - and Prohibition forced the family to turn it into a grocery store/restaurant for several years. Still, it endured".

Wow, now the fire. What kind of curse seems to be upon this wonderful place? So sad.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

To put as positive a spin on this as possible...I have recently heard that they really want to remodel, so maybe this will give them an opportunity to build a much more practical building.

What a horrible thing to happen. Great neighborhood bar with plenty of atmosphere and great bar food - some of the best pizza in town. The owners are wonderful people and haven't made a decision whether or not to rebuild. It will likely depend upon the insurance situation. Luckily, the place was not a primary source of income for either of them.

I spent many a night "coming of age' there...

I'm sure that they will bounce back from this...

In the mid - late '80's I lived within walking distance. I walked in one day to find some new fangled microbrew on tap from Oldenberg. Nothing better in those days than pitchers of OPV and a fish sammich. It was such a "meat market" there were condom machines in the Ladies RR.
