Velocity talks up Rafferty's, "a local chain"

by Robin Garr » Wed Apr 23, 2008 12:20 pm

Velocity's Lisa Hornung goes to Rafferty's this week, returning with a generally positive review with particular praise for the burgers and "some of the best salads in town." She notes that Rafferty's is a chain but declares it "a local one," founded in Bowling Green and now operting properties throughout the Southeast, Indiana and Ohio.

Big salads and hearty burgers make this 'neighborhood' joint worth a visit

While I agree about the salads (bagged lettuce and shredded cheese, but well put together with decent dressing) - and the BBQ plate is tasty (tho inauthentic) and the prime rib is good - the burgers can only be cooked well done. I don't like well done burgers!

There's no better way to ruin a burger! Do they enforce that, though, or can you talk them into making one for you that's edible? I remember some upscale-casual place - Cheddar's, maybe - where the menu emphasized that they would only cook burgers well-done, so don't even ask. We didn't ... and Mary got one that was closer to rare than medium-rare!

Andrew, I definitely agree with your comments especially regarding the burgers. They also make a pretty good club sandwich although it has gotten smaller recently (maybe not such a bad thing). Overall I'd rate them about equal to O'Charles for overall menu but they're definitely below Red Robin when it comes to burgers. They all are in the high end of "chain" restaurants.

I was never able to get them to cook a burger less than well-done so I quit ordering burgers there a long time ago. So maybe now days they will. It seems like more places recently will break their own rules in that regard to satisfy the customer (maybe competition is a good thing in this regard).

I think that Longhorns has to be the best of the casual steak houses. I used to love Texas Roadhouse until Longhorns opened....They are a little higher in price then Texas Roadhouse....but I think the food is better and worth the little extra cost....

I'll second that on the salads at Rafferty's. Their fried mushroom appetizer is pretty good too. I always get the black and blue strip, cooked medium rare.

It's been a while since I've gone to one, but I remember liking their onion loaf.

I went to the one over off Breckenridge Lane when I was spending a lot of time at Nortons with a family member. I was really surprised how much it had declined since I had last been 10-15 years ago. The place was in chaos, it took us a long time to get seated even though the place was dead in the middle of the afternoon. It was dirty. There was a film of grease or something on the table, the menus, and every other surface. The floor was littered with dropped food. It was sad.
