Gordita in a trailer on Bardstown Road and Waterson Trail

by Sarita C » Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:18 pm

Has anyone been to this yet? Mostly immigrants frequent it but it's the best gordita's I've ever had.
They park their cooking trailers in the parking lot of the shopping center on Thursday and Friday nights and are there on the weekends after 2. (weather permitting)
Carne Asada is the best.

Sarita .... I live a half mile from there. Have not seen this.

Do you know when they start?

Would like to try it.

That shopping center has two ethnic groceries .. one Latin and one International. Don't remember the names.

I am there. This is the best kind of foodie find. I remember back when Bruce used to serve out of the Mayan Mobile.

If you are ever in Brooklyn, NY in the summer months, go to the Red Hook soccer fields. There are tons of latino food vendors there selling incredible food.

Would that be the same market that Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern visited on their simultaneous 'New York' episodes?

That's the one. We've been going to it for several years. The food is outstanding and dirt cheap. You can take a $20 bill and eat all day long all different types of food from every corner of Mexico, Central and South America. It came close to being shut down by the city this year, but a compromise was reached and it is going full tilt for this summer.

We used to go to that Redhook market, or one a lot like it, back in the early '90s. It's been around for a long time.

A food/health permit is a good thing. I don't know how hard it is to get one but I prefer that some basic standard of cleanliness and food prep is going on. Why should a double standard exist between static and mobile food purveyors?

I pick up gorditas from there about once a week and never have gotten sick. (I grew up on the border so I'm a little more bold than most folks) Looks like a clean food prep operation. Kind of hit or miss when they are there during the week but they are there just about all weekend in the evenings if the weather is not too cold or windy. They usually park in the same parking lot as the Mexican Grocery. (one of my favorite spots to stock up on staples and torta bread) Sopes are good too. You have to tell them what you want whatever you order...if you ask for asada gorditas and want lettuce, cheese, etc. on it you have to tell them to put it on there. Excellent green and red tamales. Matter of fact I skipped making them last Christmas and they delivered them to my door Christmas Eve. Couple that runs it is from Texas. It's a white trailer that you would find at the fair without the lights and signage and they usually have a blue pop up tent next to it. They serve pico de gallo, a red sauce and a wicked hot green sauce that I'm thinking has avocados in it.

Because if you buy from a mobile food purveyor it can be assumed that you're making a personal decision to judge risk for yourself rather than relying on the regulatory process to do so. It's a fringe economy, frankly, and I'm not sure that it's necessary to stamp it out bureaucratically when it's not likely to attract the market that lines up at Mickey D's.

I think this is different than the market. These vendors sprang up around the soccer fields in response to the demand from the latino families that came out to watch the soccer matches all day on Saturday and Sundays. The stalls are a lot like concession stands, the people watching the games walk over and get a huarache and a jaritos and then go eat them on the bleachers while the soccer game is being played.

Here is a link to a site with some good photos:

If someone calls the health department because of this post and they shut down I think I would cry.

Don't worry, Sarita ... I don't think anyone here would do that.

That's very comforting Robin because Gorditas are the one mexican food I am incapable of making and they are only 3 minutes from my front door.:-)

Agreed. "Fringe economy" or not, if static food purveyors are required to jump through regulatory hoops, then their mobile brothers should be as well. If asking this much of these folks runs them out of business, well, maybe there was smoke where there was fire.
