Where to eat in St. Augustine?

by Derrick Dones » Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:41 pm

...since St. Pete's was already up there. What's next St. Paul, St. Louis, etc. Haha.

Seriously, my wife and I are heading to St. Augustine for a little R&R next week. We would appreciate any suggestions, from up-scale to greasy spoon. We'll be there for almost a week, so we will have the oppurtunity to try quite a few spots. Our last time down there we feel in love with the Minorcan clam chowder and had a cup or a bowl at each place we dined to compare. Thanks ahead of time.

On a sorta-food related note (If I catch them, I'll eat 'em.). I'd like to do some fishing while in St. Augustine. I'm sure I'll find plenty of flyers / ads for charters etc. If anyone knows of a can't miss place / captain / boat, I sure would appreciate the info too.

Thanks. DD

Derrick - probably you don't "need" anything else to do in St. A, but I just thought I would mention: I used to sell stained glass windows to churches for a living, and when I was on the road in Florida I found out that St. Augustine has several dozen installations of stained glass windows built by the godfather of stained glass, Louis Comfort Tiffany. Most of them are at Flagler College (which used to be the Ponce de Leon Hotel), but he has others at a some local churches. If you appreciate the beauty of stained glass, these historic examples are world-class, and you can easily get access to see them.

Thanks Marsha. I had heard of Flagler, but didn't know the history behind it. If we get a chance to, we will check it out...between bowls of that delicious Minorcan chowder, enjoying the sun on the beach, and catching the big one! DD

It's a while since I've been in the area, and I recall more of Tampa than St. Pete. But it's worth mentioning that Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa is famous both for its steaks and its remarkable wine list.

Ybor City in Tampa has plenty of Cuban restaurants, as I recall, although they seem to bill them as "Spanish" over on the Gulf coast.

I've heard that Bern's has a really interesting wine shop, but it opened since the last time I was there.

Up the coast a short way in Tarpon Springs there are excellent Greek seafood restaurants, and B-21 Wines in Tarpon is a pretty good wine retailer by Florida standards, although if you hang out regularly at Louisville's better wine shops, I doubt you'll be overwhelmed by it.

Ah, Robin, St Augustine is on the right coast, Tampa is left...

Aw, hell!

I read "St. Augustine" and THOUGHT "St. Petersburg."

I dunno whether to delete that post or move it to its own thread or just forget the whole thing.

We also like Columbia Restaurant.

Enjoy St. Augustine. We go there for a day or two at least once a year.

I ate at a few places when I was there a couple yeas ago, but not much of it was worth mentioning. Just try and stay away from the touristy looking places. They look that way because they are. There was one good place I frequented though. It was a burrito shop run by surfers called Pesky's. I highly recommend the fish burrito with the fried Pollock.

Try the A1A Alehouse at the foot of the Lion Bridge. I haven't been in years. A1A used to have some awesome Cuban selections.

I plan on checking out A1A alehouse...sounds like a pretty good spot. I'm leaving at the end of this week...any additional suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks. DD
