Support a Sweet Cause

by Jessica H » Sat Apr 12, 2008 1:29 pm

On Thursday, April 17, 2008, Sweet Surrender Dessert Café will host “A Sweet Night: A Benefit for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.” From 6 PM to 10 PM, a sampling of desserts will be offered for $12 per person. A portion of the event’s proceeds will be given to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Whole cakes and other prizes will be raffled off throughout the evening. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased for $1.00 each. All of the proceeds from the raffle will go directly to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a wonderful organization,” said owner, Jessica Haskell. “They were a big help to me during my own battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I want to return the favor.”

Haskell, age 29, is a three time survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Originally diagnosed in May of 2000, she battled through reoccurrences in 2003 and 2004. After undergoing chemo, radiation and a stem cell transplant, she has been cancer free for three years.

Jessica, what a great cause - congratulations and thank you for donating your time, product and effort.

Thursday the 14th is the night of the Eddie Izzard show at the Brown Theater. John and I have tickets to Izzard at 8:00 P.M., and, having just talked it over, we are going to try try try to make it to your fund-raiser for "pre-show" noshing.

Girl, I hope you know I am VERY strict about my diet, so this will be a major exception for me!!

Marsha, I hope you are able to make it. It would be great to get a chance to meet you in person.

I try to do something to help raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society each year. This seems like a fun way to do it.

I really appreciciate that you're willing to make an exception to your diet for my cause. The sampling consists of ten mini desserts so prepare yourself. And have fun at the Izzard show!

Jessica,
I would LOVE to attend, but am unavailable that evening. Maybe I'll swing by this evening after I mail the dreaded taxes ... I'll probably need a treat and will give my last dollar for a raffle ticket!!

Jessica, please don't be offended if I only take a small bite of several, and pass the leftovers over to my boyfriend. I have lost 38 pounds since January 2nd, and used my free day this week on samples from our beer dinner at Lou Lou last night. I also imagine that I'll be gently picking your brain for info ("what kind of a pan do you bake this in? where do you buy it?"), since I'm not formally trained. I'm always so jealous how professional and finished everything of yours looks!

Wow! 38 pounds! Congratulations!

I won't be offended at all if you just take a few small bites. The important thing is raising money for the LLS. And being around dessert all day, most of the time I can only handle a few bites of things myself. Otherwise it's easy to get sweeted out.

I am not formally trained either, but my kitchen staff is. I was trained by the previous owner and usually keep out of my pastry chef's way unless we're short-handed. But you're welcome to pick my brain and I'd be happy to show you what equipment we use.

Sounds great! We're heading to Paralell 38 for a fund raiser for Metro Animal Services (severly under funded) and they are serving hors d'ouevres, so why not top it off with dessert and more fund raising?

It's such a beautiful day for a dessert outing, I just wanted to remind everyone about Jessica's fund-raiser tonight. I had to call and tell her John and I won't be able to make it - he's having a dental emergency today, and we've had to substitute a trip to the dentist in place of eating yummy desserts (can you imagine a more horrible switcheroo?) before we go to the Izzard concert.

I for one will be sending Jessica a check in lieu of our actually being there. Anyone else that can't make it: you can write a donation check to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and mail it to Jessica care of Sweet Surrender, 1804 Frankfort Ave., Louisville, KY 40206. But I encourage you to actually show up in person. Right next door (in the former Lou Lou space) is Bourbon Bros. Barbecue, which I've heard good things about (they've re-done the interior). But - like we pastry people always say - EAT DESSERT FIRST! :D

Just wanted to thank everyone for turning out at our fundraiser last night. We raised over $500 for the Leukemia & LYmphoma Society in just a few short hours and had a great time doing it!

We are still accepting donations. Marsha kindly mentioned our address above for anyone wanting to send in a check.

I think this might have to become an annual event!
