After dinner is over...

by Gretchen D. » Tue Apr 08, 2008 11:10 pm

where do you go now that The Jazz Factory is no more? I really enjoy jazz!

We are dining with friends on Friday night (April 11th) and I can't think of much to do afterwards. I will name and claim my loser status when it comes to current adult socialization beyond the dinner table... three young children will do that to most anyone! Whenever we go out with friends, it is usually just for dinner because someone has to go relieve the babysitter.

I would appreciate your suggestions for music and/or activities, based on these restrictions:

1. I am not interested in anywhere that is just a bar (with no live music or at least something to do) because our friends do not drink alcohol.
2. Non-smoking only. OK, I know that might be a tough one... at least a non-smoking section.
3. Not too loud... I want to be able to enjoy conversation.
4. Not a bunch of kids. I love them, BUT, I when am paying someone so I can have time away from my own, I do not want to be listening to someone else's.

Please do not make any "adult-only" rated suggestions! Thanks!!

I would dare to offer the opened window walls they offer in Tumbleweed at Waterfront Park. The walls that overlook the river are all glass and they pull them back in nice weather. You might want to call ahead to check if they are doing that Friday night. Good luck wherever you end up.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

Well everything is non-smoking now since the middle of January....

On a Friday night at least this week I recommend Jack's Lounge in St Matthew's. It shouldn't be too crowded with everyone gone to Destin on Spring Break. However you should call first to confirm seating as it can get crowded quickly....

Another option is the lounge downstairs at Asiatique...Very hip and usually doesn't fill up till later (around 11:30 or so)This is about as close as you can get to what your looking for I feel...

Both of these places offer much better than average bar snacks, are cozy and should lend themselves to conversation!

Another thought(although I haven't been there myself) would be ReView at the top of the Galt House... You could watch the comings and goings of the crew setting up the Thunder festivities!!!!

Varanese features live jazz nightly. Weather permitting, we are in the al fresco season, so the glass wall is retracted. If you have noise concerns, request to be seated inside.

I second Z's... that pineapple rum cake is phenomenal.
and Limestone... consistently great.

Re: After dinner is over... don't forget dessert

You could skip the dessert at the restaurant you will be dining at and take the group elsewhere for dessert. I've always enjoyed the soufflés at Z's Oyster Bar and they take a good 30 minutes to prepare. Or Morton's. Or I hear Cafe Lou Lou has some great desserts. Being a Friday night, you might need reservations - or you could socialize while waiting for a table again. Or just go to Starlight for frozen custard. Or visit the Homemade Pie Kitchen.

I love dessert, I just hate the calories.

If you're dessert eaters, we often get small groups on Friday and Saturday who want a change of scenery after dinner. We're open until 11 PM weekends, and 10 PM week nights.

You might want to try Speakeasy in New Albany. It's non-smoking, too.

I absolutely second Stephan's suggestion of the bar at Varanese. The music is close by, but I've never had trouble talking with friends.

A few faves...

Caffe Classico - neat place to have dessert, wine, espresso, sandwich, what have you...and enjoy either flemenco, bellydance, or some sort of musical act. Nice way to end the night.

Jennica's cafe and wine bar - http://www.jeniccas.com/

La Bodega - mostly drinks here and apps.

I could just walk up and down Bardstown road and in and out of places...ear-x-tacy, guitar emporium (to look), all the galleries, or just for the ambiance.

It seems there is always something going on around town.

Won't help you at all this Friday, but every other Friday of the month you can enjoy a trolley hop or bardstown bound. Btown bound is the third Friday of every month (sidewalk sales, refreshments and later hours for local merchants), Market and Main hop is the first Friday, and Frankfort Avenue is the final Friday of the month. I recall something about a second Friday affair in St. Matthews but am not sure if this still going on as I've never heard a report on the matter.

Also, I did enjoy time spent at Varenese last weekend when they opened the place up. You're as much outdoors as you are in when the whether is good. Very tasteful designs and jazz every night.
