Breakfast at North End Cafe

by Tom Sizemore » Tue Apr 08, 2008 10:00 pm

The wife & I will be making our first visit to North End Cafe this weekend for breakfast with out of town guests. I've heard great things about the place, especially the breakfast fare, and am looking forward to the experience. Is there a signature breakfast dish? What menu selections would you recommend?

Many thanks for your suggestions & feedback!

My favorite breakfast item there is:

"House Smoked Trout Hash $7.99
Smoked trout, potatoes, carrots and parsnip. Served with two eggs any style and choice of bread."

I get the biscuit for the bread choice and add a small side of gravy. Of course, coffee to go with it all.

No lunch required!

I have posted so many times about breakfast at NEC. It's because I believe they have the best breakfast in the Ville. Well, maybe besides Waffle House. You just can't go wrong. The corned beef or trout hash, pancakes, migas, biscuits and gravy (though I haven't had the vegetarian), the gigantic hearty breakfast, french toast, taco's and the steak and eggs, etc. The real problem is where to start and where to end. So I just keep going back.

Here is a their breakfast menu. Please let us know what y'all chose. http://www.northendcafe.com/breakfast_menu.php

Last time I had the Trout Hash it tasted real strong and "fishy"....so it's off my list as a breakfast item. Otherwise I love the food.

One time I had the trout hash and it was kinda dry, but a little water helped it out. Never had fishy trout hash though.

Did you ever have it when you didn't think it tasted "fishy"? The reason I ask is because the fish is smoked, and for me at least, the smoking process enhances the fish flavor. Perhaps the trout was just smoked longer than other times you have had it and that is the reason it tasted more "fishy" to you. Maybe. Maybe not.

It didn't taste "fishy" in a good way the last time I had it. Maybe it had been smoked longer but it wasn't pleasing. I think it was a one time thing but I'll just stay safe next time.

I really love their pancakes. I know that's a plain dish that everyone serves but I think the North End does them really, really well. Then again I just really love pancakes so take that as you will.

Hiya Tom,
I am a server @North End. I'll be there all week in the mornings, so ask for me and I'll steer you true. My favorite is the corn beef hash. They make it in house, and you can really tell the difference! Also, in regards to the "fishy" trout hash, that earned us a 3 1/2 star rating not to long ago. Maybe you got it right after our smoker got stolen from the back dock and they were trying to recreate it properly. Give it another shot I urge you. We get all of our seafood from Bluefin, and it comes several times a week, so no chance of it sitting around. Although not a veggie, our tofu stirfry is on my regular must haves too.
Little secret, you can call on your way in and they'll put you on the wait list.......don't say I told you. Can't wait to meet you!

Sorry we missed you, Nora. Had to scramble to get everyone together & we were later than we hoped to be, so just getting there was an adventure! Anyway, what a great experience we had! Two of our guests got the big hearty breakfast, one had an omelette, and 3 had pancakes, including myself, along with a breakfast taco. I must say the breakfast taco was quite possibly one of the best things I've ever eaten! I will be ordering 3 of them the next time I visit. The pancakes were good, although I must admit they were a bit below my expectations. My wife makes cornmeal buttermilk pancakes at home and I prefer those. All in all, service was impeccable & food was great. We will definitely be back soon!
