Pizza and Beer.... put them together and get.....

by Todd Antz » Mon Apr 07, 2008 10:13 pm

Pizza and beer go together.... well like pizza and beer. So why waste the time ordering a pizza and picking up a great beer, when you can get it all in one bottle. Check out the information below:

"Pizza Beer" was developed Labor Day, 2006 by Tom and Athena Seefurth in our home brewery in Campton Township, IL. It all started with a surplus of tomatoes, a bag of garlic & an idea that started early in the spring when we planted our garden herbs.

The goal was to create a beer that would pair with a wide variety of foods, especially our favorite, Pizza! In the end, we were pleasantly surprised that this "mess" turned out to be the best thing since the guy with chocolate that bumped into Ralph Mouth & mixed up the chocolate with the peanut butter! Indeed, the world will love "Pizza Beer".

"Pizza Beer" IS A DEBRIS FREE product. The Margarita pizza is put into the mash & steeped like a tea bag. A whole wheat crust made with water, flour & yeast is topped with tomato, oregano, basil & garlic. The essence of the pizza spices is washed off with hot water and filtered into a brewpot, where it is boiled for a long, long time. During the process, we add hops & spices in a cheesecloth type bag & filter the cooled liquid into a fermentation vessel. (big glass 6 gallon water jug). After a week or two, the beer is good to go. Keg it or bottle it.

Why do I write about this? One of our craft beer distributors in Indiana has picked up the brand, and will be distributing it soon in our market. I'm really not sure what to think about this. I'm sure I'll get at least a case to see what it will do, but it might be one of the strangest brews I have ever heard of.

Note, I in no way suggest dropping the pizza and just substituting this beer in its place....

I... don't think I can get behind that. There's a big difference between enjoying two things together and putting the essence of one thing into another. That sounds pretty nasty.

reminds me of when they put the peanut butter and jelly together in that one jar and sold it to you. Sounds like a great idea, but just doesn't work out like you hope. Please, let us all know how that goes. :D

I've read some reviews of it on ratebeer.com, and the feeling seems to be that it isn't as bad as people initially thought it would be. Not a great beer by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly an interesting experimant. Heck, I'll try any beer once.
p.s. I should note that the reviews I read are from the draft version. Not sure how it will translate to bottle, especially since it is now being brewed by Sprecher. They may have changed the recipe for commercial production.

I must defend the Bud/Clamato product.... I know that it sounds gross to most conosieurs of better Hops and Barley...

But, I for one for a long time have enjoyed a little tomato product(V-8) with my weak ass Bud before they even put this on the market...

You can call me every name in the book but I find this stuff quite "refreshing" and "addictive" ....

Yep, I know it goes against every principle I have as a chef and foodie but ....I LOVE THIS STUFF for some unknown reason...

Maybe it's the saltiness, or the fact that it tastes REFRESHING to me(I can see myself enjoying this on a hot Summer day after pushing the mower around for a few hours)....

You can call it a debacle if you want but those marketing guys at A-B have hit a home run in my eyes....

Something UNIQUE.....and way better than Jones Turkey and Dressing soda

When I had a bar 30 years ago, I carried small cans of tomato juice and bloody mary mix. Most bars did. Customers mixed the juice with beer. Usually two or three beers to one can of juice.

I still do it once in awhile.
