So, how about a new forum for "where should I eat in ??"

by TP Lowe » Thu Apr 03, 2008 8:58 pm

Seems like we're seeing more and more of these interesting (if not terribly relevant to Louisville) posts here. How about a new forum, Robin, for the non-Louisville "anyone know" requests? Just a thought. I'm a happy camper regardless.

I like the way it is...understand your position, but that's my vote.

I tried to indicate that I don't really have a position, but was merely raising the topic. However, after looking back through some of the far-flung requests (including a couple of mine from places as far as Monte Carlo and Beijing) it does seem to make sense.

The dilemma with all subsidiary forums is clarity vs traffic. Secondary forums always end up with fewer people looking on and thus fewer people to answer questions.

One possible solution: Allow "Where to eat in ... " questions on the main forum, where the most people will see them. But create a separate forum as a sort of food/wine travel archive, and move the non-Louisville threads over there for permanent record after they've run their course.

Naturally we all peruse the forum index based upon our own interests and in our own comfortable fashion, but I personally enjoy rolling through this section without worrying that I've missed something poignant and foodish, or worrying about whether or not my new topics have busted through boundaries of applicable topics. I'm not afraid of change, and I'd gladly convert if necessary, but I hope it doesn't happen. I'm all for branches and I'm sure another will come along, I just don't think this is it. But I love your posts, TP! Please don't think I'm not a fan!

Oooh, Robin posted at the same time that I was posting, so I didn't have a chance to hear his proposal before I submitted my reply. That sounds great. If it's not too much trouble, we'd all benefit. But I don't want our maker to spend time administrating at the expense of his input on our discussions.

from Homer, IL to Beijing, China.

There are many other sites to find info on out-of-town restaurants, but I think we're more comfortable accepting advice from folks we recognize here. I say keep it as is, though.

Hotel de Paris. Great food, elegant service, dramatic surroundings (the entire roof retracts for instant al fresco dining). On the night we went someone (male) in our group spotted Mariah Carey climbing the steps toward the casino. As is her style, she was sporting small pieces of clothing on some of her larger features. He was smitten.

I think if people care to read the sub forums, or care to offer input and commentary, they do.

i'm pretty prolific in posting in the "Louisville Restaurants Forum" (which these days seems to only be 75% restaurant related), and a bit here and there in the "Louisville Kitchen"...
I do read/browse the other forums, but don't reply reply unless i have some input.

I think that's how most people view the other forums...

Sub-sections are just that...
lesser than the main section.

who cares if it takes up a bit more bandwith and baud-rate?

The people who would/want to/interested in using such a forum would relish in it.
So what if people cross topic stuff back and forth from forum to forum?
i don't know about you, but it happens pretty regularly and is common on any other message board i've frequented (especially if it's cross linked to an internal topic/thread)

I know it literally takes a few key strokes and a few twists of the wrist on the mouse to make this happen (i've ran similar message boards myself - which is why i've always pushed to upgrade this one... esp. when it was hopelessly outdated in "tech").

Speaking from a moderating point of view, and in the view of public and media interest...

the only real compelling rationale here to not create a smaller sub forum would be that it's another forum that requires policing and more clicking of the mouse.

i'm all for a "suggest dining" forum.

...hell, that probably makes up for a good percentage of the total dialog contained on this forum as a whole anyway.

My work has recently had me traveling all over the country and soon, all over the world. I have posted requests for restaurant suggestions on multiple occasions. The answers I have received have been a great help. When you are in a city for a day or two and then off to another city, you don't always have time to do restaurant research. I am normally going on business, not food. Therefore my time cannot always be focused on searching out great meals. That being said, when you are in a town only for a day or two, you hate to waste those few meals on bad food. I also give suggestions when other people have requests, if I have any food experience in that town.

This has been a great tool for me when I am visiting other cities.

Much like T.V., radio, etc if there is something that does not peak your interest, change the channel (read another topic)....

We are fortunate to have a group that is so well traveled and knowledgeable about food in general, not just what is in their backyard.

I travel a lot for work and make eating my primary non-work activity in those cities. I almost never post about eating in those other places because there is no place for it here.

Okay, that's a new wrinkle.

What if we add an "Eating Around the World" forum? People could post reports in it at any time. People who want to post a "where can I eat in Jogjakarta" query can still do it in the main forum, but after those threads cool down, then they can be moved into Eating Around the World.

Anyone think this is a good idea? Anyone think it's a bad idea?

very good idea, and it would make for a very useful archive for forum members who are planning a trip.

By your logic, if this is strictly a Louisville restaurant forum, many of the regular topics will need to be treated in the same fashion.
