colombian food or drink-need help fast

by Ellen White » Tue Apr 01, 2008 6:15 pm

My daughter is doing a report on Colombia for school. She is in the 9th grade. She has been out of school for a while, but she's back now, and just found out she has to bring in a food or beverage on Thursday or Friday to do a presentation for the class. Coffee is obvious, but this is for 9th graders, so I'm not sure that coffee is appropriate. Plus, I don't know think they will have access to cooking. In other words, it should be something already prepared, maybe a dessert or traditional bread.
Any ideas?

I believe they have a hot chocolate beverage that is quite tasty. Also there is a traditional bread called arepa that might work well.

Will there be an oven available at the presentation? I've found a good recipe for roasted plantains with cinnamon and sea salt, but they should be served warm.

That's the problem. They won't have access to any cooking equipment, so whatever they take in has to be room temp. Maybe I should check out Valu Market?

I am really good friends with some colombians and we have eaten in many colombian restaurants and there are quite a few things that she can make. Valu market is a good place to check out but even better you may want to try La tropicana on preston they have pre made arepas, Masarepa (the corn meal specifically made for Arepa dough), colombian chorizo, mixes for ajiaco, and loads more stuff. As a bonus you can work on your spanish! Buena Suerte!(Good Luck)
arepas, tostones, bunuelos, pandequeso, ajiaco, and arroz con pollo are just some examples. Colombian food is pretty simple and hearty, seasoned well but not spicy unless you use the colombian Aji sauce ( a jalapeno based sauce used as a common condiment).

Here are some recipes I found online...
Aji - http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Colombian-Aji/Detail.aspx
Arepas - http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/239943
tostones - http://nikas-culinaria.com/2006/02/01/h ... -tostones/
Bunuelos - http://www.recipezaar.com/239928
pandequeso - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 104AAAD8bJ
Pandebono - http://cookingresources.suite101.com/ar ... ono_recipe
ajiaco - http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes ... 99,00.html
arroz con pollo - http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-d ... ipe=187663

Hope that helps

Arepas! Sold by street vendors on Queens Boulevard in NYC! That might be a great option ... and I think room temperature service would be okay.

Here's a recipe from Epicurious.com, attributed to "The Arepa Lady," Piedad, in Jackson Heights:

Ingredients
Servings: Makes 12 Arepas.

2 1/2 cups milk
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 1/2 cups white arepa flour (precooked cornmeal)
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup grated mozzarella
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Preparation

Bring milk to a simmer in a small saucepan, then remove from heat and stir in butter.

Combine arepa flour, salt, sugar, and mozzarella in a large bowl.

Add hot milk and stir until combined. Let mixture stand until milk is absorbed enough for a soft dough to form, 1 to 2 minutes (dough will continue to stiffen).

Form dough into 12 balls (about 2 inches in diameter) and flatten between palms into 3 1/2- to 4-inch patties (about 1/3 inch thick).

Heat ‚ tablespoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over moderately low heat until hot, then cook 3 or 4 arepas until cooked through and golden in patches, 6 to 8 minutes on each side. Make more arepas in same manner, adding oil as needed.

Thanks everybody. I think I will head over to La Tropicana and check it out!
