Coffee Roasters

by Robin F. » Mon Mar 31, 2008 1:24 pm

Hello All! Is there a list somewhere of who is roasting coffee in Louisville? We like to try the small roasters and I don't want to miss anyone. We've tried Sunergos, Jackson's Organic, Ray's Monkey House, La Vida Java, and the recently departed Atomic Saucer (oh and Heine Bros. of course). Have we missed anyone?

Thanks!

That looks like a canonical list, Robin, and Heine's probably deserves credit for pioneering the art in Louisville and turning it into arguably the city's No. 1 mini-chain. Jackson's and Sunergos earn a dead heat with me for utter passion in the art of microroastery perfection. But they're all good.

Without knowing the answer to this question, I would check to see if Day's, Highland Coffee and/or Java Brewing roast any of their own. Ditto Blue Mountain.

And you might throw in Derby City on East Market, where Matthew dispenses just about all the city's best locally roasted product with an exceptionally skilled hand, and you can pay your money and make your choice.

The only shop in the above list that has a connection to a roaster is Java Brewing, their beans come from a company called Safai Roasting based in Prospect I believe. Highland Coffee says their beans are locally roasted but it's not true. And they won't tell you where their coffee does come from if you ask. Blue Mountain also imports their coffee from out of town. I also don't roast any coffee. I get my espresso from HobbKnobb (best espresso blend in Kentuckyanna). The rest of my coffee comes from a revolving cast of local roasters that has included Dbl Shotz, Atomic Saucer, Jackson's Organic, Sunergos and Ray's Monkey House. Mostly these days I use Hobb Knob nearly exclusively, although I still purchase air-roasted coffee from Dbl Shotz and gas roasted from Ray's Monkey House.

Hobknobs roasting company in Floyds knobs is a great little roastery and coffee shop. Located Paoli pyke. Jim Book with Bean st coffee company is roasting too, I believe, I haven't tried his coffee yet but I know he is passionate about it. He has a location in Floyd Knobs too, not sure where though.

I am not familiar with any others.

Keep the roastery hopping up and thanks for your support.

I tried to say that but it came out a little ambiguous, Matthew: Derby City earns my respect (and that of others, I think), by showcasing the range of local roasteries rather than just becoming one more voice in the choir. Good work!

Thanks for the input. I'm sitting at my desk right now having a lovely cup of Jackson's (thank you for the donation to the public radio spring drive!). My husband and I were in the Knobs last summer/spring and stopped at HobKnob. Bought a bag to go (and latte), and it was good. My favorites in town are Jackson's, Sunergos and Ray's . . . it's like a coffee game when you go to Ray's because you never know what they'll have!

Robin

..... you are welcome and thank you for the quality radio.

Also, thank you for supporting us. We just had our one year anniversary last month and I can sincerely say, that if it wasn't for the fantastic support of customers such as yourself, we would never have made it. It is all word of mouth for us. Being a two person operation and with one of us working a second job it has been one of the hardest things I have personally ever done. Don't try this at home folks.

I'm super honored to be mentioned with the likes of Heini brothers and Sunregos too. Heini Brothers changed Louisville forever. They have raised the bar for coffee in this town and continue to lead the local market. The Heini and May's families are committed to making Louisville a better place too.... that works for me.

What can you say about Sunergos, they are very cool dudes and amazing roasters. We met while I was researching my new business venture and instead of considering me any kind of threat or competition, they helped me all the way. I actually had a customer the other day that was sent by them. Now that's selfless.

Nimbus from Rays Monkey house is very impressive. I doubt that there is a better coffee scholar in the city. This guy knows his stuff, I believe he has at least 2 PhDs One in mathematics and that is what roasting is mostly about.

Robin if you tried Hob Knobs last spring you should defintaely check them out again this spring, a year of roasting experience will do nothing but improve their coffee.

I tip my hat to all small businesses hanging in there during these very hard times and congratulations to Matt and his One year, I hope his 10th will be an event to remember.

Louisville really is special when it comes to supporting local business and want to thank everyone for keeping us going. If we can get through this rough patch we can make it.

So, please stop by and try a cup of our fresh organic coffee and try out the new coffee shops popping up all over town. Louisville is THE next Coffee town, I can feel it.

Thanks Robin, "mr national" Garr
