Just to put in my $0.02....

The queso from Tumbleweed....Most of us could replicate it... but ..

The biscuits and gravy from Bob Evan's(I've tried real hard to make this stuff at home but I seem to be missing something)....

The Drunken Chicken from J. Gumbos(or Gumbo a Go Go in my end of town)....I still haven't had a bad dish of this stuff and I've had plenty....

Won-ton soup from any Double Dragon location...(it's all pretty much the same but I crave it when I feel poorly)

And Last but not least...The Chili Mac Deluxe from Steak and Shake...(The combination of spicy chili meat to canned chili sauce, spaghetti and cheese just rocks my world)

Grilled cheese sandwiches and SOS at Pestos (not on menu)

by jpdurbin » Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:59 am

OK, as many of you know I have lunch at Pesto’s often and therefore know everyone working there and most of their usual patrons. The other day my coworkers were discussing their favorite comfort foods. I could not get SOS out of my mind so chef and I had a talk… I caught them early, before the usual lunch rush, so Chef Mark played. A bit later Mark came out with a boat bowl, filled with toasted/cubed Italian bread covered with some sort of light white wine cheese sauce with added prosciutto and lightly peppered. It was practically a well dressed cheese fondue and eyed by most patrons passing my table. It hit the spot. If they have tomato soup (or chili), they will do (if not slammed) grilled cheese sandwiches too. You merely need to request them off menu.

Gasthaus

by Sherrie G » Sun Mar 30, 2008 11:05 am

Being from New England, I'm a meat and potatoes gal. When I'm missing home, I head for Gasthaus. They are consistently in my top five favorite restaurants.

Or Cracker Barrel for their mac 'n cheese. Tastes just like Mom used to make.

I second that... so satisfying. I also make sure it includes the hashbrown casserole. Whenever I find myself at Cracker Barrel, that's what I order - morning, noon or night.

Maybe it's because it's 11 a.m. on a Sunday and I haven't yet eaten, but I can't stop thinking of the comfort foods I crave. Here are some more of my dirty little secrets:

A Steak n Shake double steakburger with cheese, mustard, lettuce, and tomato, paired with a bowl of chili deluxe with fries for dipping (this is my go to hangover cure)

Tortilla chips with queso dip from El Nopal

The #6 Combo at El Nopal - a beef enchilada, beef taco, and rice and beans

The chicken livers at Old Stone Inn were incredible... now I'm searching for another local restaurant that prepares them as well as my father-in-law does

Fried oysters from the Fishery

I know this is a restaurant forum...but restaurants, in general, don't provide comfort food in the way I feel the term applies to me. My wife and I are both professionals so we eat out alot secondary to time restraints...when we cook at home it's usually fairly serious cooking with wine and the like. Over time I think we suffer from pallette fatigue....and so comfort for me is the complete opposite of any commercially prepared food.

In my life comfort food is my 89 y/o grandmother's fried chicken, mashed potatos with cream gravy, greens, and cornbread....plus a tall glass of extra-strong and extra-sweet iced tea. Butterscotch pie and black coffee to finish it off.

A meal of this type was common in my family growing up....as we all age it occurs less frequently but takes on an extra-special meaning when I get a chance indulge periodically. So far her health is good....keep cooking!

BTW....I was at the Cape Codder in the early 60s....I was entranced by the little garden-type fountain at the end of the dining room. Had fried clams there for the first time.

Biscuits and veggie gravy at North End, French toast at NE, pancakes at Lynn's and Toast.

I just love me some breakfast food. :)
