Who's got your favorite comfort food?

by Robin Garr » Fri Mar 28, 2008 12:43 pm

This is such a broad question, I couldn't come up with a decent way to frame it as a poll, so let's just talk.

Thinking particularly of "comfort food" in terms of simple, affordable fare that makes us feel good, what are some of your favorite local eateries that have it? For me, it's not as simple as beans and greens and red-eye gravy. When I'm craving comfort, I'm just as likely to find it in ethnic food or something that just warms me. When I got out of the hospital recently, the first place I went was ... Maido! So I guess that makes Japanese food and sushi a No. 1 comfort choice for me. As I recall, my second meal out was at Red Pepper and my next was Tony Boombozz, so I am nothing if not eclectic.

Anyway, with winter still rattling around and a scary economy prompting us to keep one hand on our wallet pockets, I thought it might be fun and useful to make a list of a lot of our favorite spots for affordable food that, in one way or another, brings us "comfort."

So let's hear yours!

Oh! I LOVE this! Thanks for the reminder, Amy. Actually, all your picks are great, but ... the Big Salad! Must have one soon! With double dressing!

Rack of lamb at Saffron's, octopus at Proof, hummus and quinoa at Shiraz, mac at cheese at Jucy's and a double order of in the ring hash browns at Waffle House. And one item not be had at any restaurant, my own chicken and rice soup recipe.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

When it comes to one of my favorite affordable comfort foods (at least for now), I make a short drive over to Moby Dick for a First Mate Combo Meal...Rye bread of course...with a side of cole slaw...and an extra hush puppy for good measure...though I am a little concerned that the slogan "A Whale of a Sandwich" could easily become "A WHALE OF A PRICE FOR A SANDWICH"...
