LEO/LHB: Old Louisville burger hop

by Robin Garr » Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:02 am

LEO's Eats with Louisville HotBytes; guest writer Dan Thomas
(Ollie's Trolley; Dizzy Whizz; Granville Inn, and Wagner's Pharmacy)

The humble burger: It's a mainstay of the American diet. Most people appreciate a great burger. So where can you go to get something better than the normal fast food offerings from Rally McHardee King and the rest of their brethren? What are the "destination" places that we will go out of our way to, just to get a burger fix we can't get anywhere else?

Louisville does have independent burger joints still hanging on and doing what they do best. Several are located in and around Old Louisville. What makes these places so good? How do they compare with each other?

I wanted to check this out for myself. So I went on an Old Louisville "Burger Hop."

First stop: Ollie's Trolley (978 S. Third St., 583-5214), on the corner of Third and Kentucky.

Full reports in LEO and on LouisvilleHotBytes.

Good burgers to be had at Juanita's Burger Boy at 1450 S Brook (corner of Brook & Burnett). Burger Boy Double Decker with Cheese and Sauce is $1.59. A platter with fries and slaw is just $2 more. When you don't want to deal with the street theatre at Dizzy Whiz head over to Juanita's. We get carry out from here all the time.

Great addition, Ed, thanks! I'm sure Chef Dan is looking on here ...

Dan did a great job for us ... this wasn't his first outing in the LEO/LHB pulpit, and it won't be his last! That said, I doubt that he really wants to bust out of the kitchen to do all that writing every week. It's a tough job ...

Thanx Guys... I only had a Thousand words to work with/(Ha Ha)

I did leave out a couple of other places.... If you are in the the neighborhood then you already know about the Knockerburger and Juanita's...

Not worthy of print space(IMHO) but given a late night stumble they both should get an Honorable Mention...

What about the Waffle House double bacon cheeseburger, medium rare (cow blood oozing out), with a double order of hash browns in the ring? Crispy lettuce, nice tomato slices, pungent onions, mayo, yummo.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

Sorry Doogie ...

There is no Waffle House close to Old Louisville unless you cross the bridge to the Waffle Steak in Jefferonville...

To be honest...

I've never had a burger there...

It's all about the eggs and taters for me(and sometimes I will get a Chicken Melt on Texas Toast)

Yeah...But I go to the WH for the Taters and eggs...

It's hard to get me out of that rut of eating what "they do best'....

Now, if you want to go for a Burger on "neutral" territory...Say the "Wall St. Cafe" in Downtown Jeffersonville where the service is very poor but the burger is almost worth the wait...but legendary in it's own right (and they have a nice Breakfast as well)....but the service will still suck...It does spoil the experience.......
