Chicago Gyros has a new owner

by Ed Vermillion » Tue Mar 25, 2008 4:19 pm

Tom Hufstetler is the new owner of Chicago Gyros. A native of the suburban Cleveland, Ohio area, this is his first foray in the restaurant business. Tom is manning the counter and has added cable T.V. and wi-fi. He has ordered new tables for the front patio and also has a custom patio cover ready for when the weather breaks. I had a traditional gyro for lunch today and it was very fresh and very good. He actually had some tomato slices that didn't look or taste like the usual winter tomato. His website is up and running and he has plans to modify it so people can order carry out via the web. Dine in and delivery are also options.

Thanks for the post, Ed. The menu looks vegetarian friendly and since I am off tomorrow I will stop by for a falafal and Moroccan hot tea!

Update!

I picked up take-out from Chicago Gyros this afternoon, met the owner and had a good long talk with him about the direction he is taking the restaurant. I was pleased to discover that he has significantly upgraded the quality of lamb used and he buys it in whole and slices it at the store. From talking with him, it sounds like he is really dedicated to making the place more inviting and more integral to the Brownsboro Rd. scene. Very nice guy.

As for the food: outstanding! My wife and I split a Mediterranean Gyro and a loaded Philly Steak (and I mean loaded). The Mediterranean was stuffed with wonderfully seasoned meat, feta cheese, lettuce and tomato. This thing was PACKED. One gyro is easily a meal (but they offer a platter meal with fries as well!) The Philly Steak was just plain huge as well, stuffed with black olives, banana and jalapeño peppers, lettuce and tomato. I am a big fan of Spinelli's Philly Cheese Steaks, but this thing is going to make it very difficult when a Philly Steak hankerin' comes on.

To make things even better, my wife and I both ate well, got full and the grand total was $9.79!!

As far as I am concerned Chicago Gyros is in good hands and has just earned a new regular customer!

I stopped by this afternoon as well. I found the owner to be a bit forgetfull, but certainly friendly and willing to listen to suggestions. The hot tea came in a small kettle with a small glass like one finds in Africa. it was not, unfortunately, mint moroccan tea although the Moroccan guy in the kitchen is looking for some mint tea. My Greek salad was fine, once I had to point out that he had forgotten the feta. As for my falafal, it was dry. I informed the owner who promised to experiment with the oil-chickpea ratio. He also said that he will experiment with some other Moroccan dishes to eventually add to the menu. All in all, it was indeed cheap, friendly, and I wish him the best.

I have not been since the ownership change, but there was certainly nothing wrong with the old owner. I go there a couple times a month due to it being tasty and relatively close to work. Have to drop by soon.

On a follow-up visit yesterday, I picked up a Cheesy Mediterranean Gyro and another Philly Steak, plus two hot dogs and fries.

While the Gyros did not get the cheese I expected, it was so good I was willing to over look. The Philly Steak was, once again, amazing and dressed to order. The menu said "Chicago style Hot Dogs," but they will dress them any way you like. I got mine with mustard, ketchup, jalapeño and tomato. They were great, but he wraps them like he wraps the other sandwiches, which compromises the bun a bit.

All in all, still very happy with the new crew and looking forward to more fast, cheap, delicious food. :D
