Mark R. wrote:Ron, maybe you'd like to explain to us the relevance of the article you posted. It with this study done about that direct transfer of bacteria from pigs to humans on farms. The problem at Claudia Sanders was caused by people contracting an illness while eating in a restaurant. It's hard to derive parallels.

The parallel is the fact that Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (commonly shortened to Staph) is the bug that can be transmitted to the food you are eating from food workers handling your food. The article points out that pigs (the offending food at Claudia Sanders) can also pass on MRSA (staph) from themselves to the farmers who raise them. Staph is an incredibly common bacterium and usually harmless. When it takes on its superbug form it is really dangerous. Pigs are a new vector ( an agent, usually an insect or other animal, able to carry pathogens from one host to another) in the transmission of MRSA, and that should get your attention. In the case of CS, the opposite was true. The relevance is in regards to food safety in general, don't fixate directly on the Claudia Sanders incident.

Here is some interesting background on MRSA. Pay particular attention to CA-MRSA (community associated MRSA)
