A little charity help from my friends

by Kris Billiter » Fri Mar 21, 2008 8:55 am

Hey gang. As some of you know I am the youth minister at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Old Louisville. One of our ministries at WSBC is the SEAL program (Student Enrichment in Academics and Life). This is an after school program that meets twice a week for 2 hours each day for the purposes of tutoring and life skills training. SEAL is a program for at risk middle and high school students in our community who are recommended by either a teacher, counselor, or minister to take part in our program. We use paid tutors and a director so the cost of the program is about $15,000 each year. To help offset the cost this year we will be having a SEAL luncheon and Auction on Sunday June 8th at 12:30. We are currently looking for donations of items to be auctioned off, and I was wondering if any of you might be interested in helping us out. If you are an owner or a manager of a restaraunt and would be willing to donate a gift certificate, or if you are feeling extremely generous, perhaps some sort of group experience, we would be extremely thankful. If any of you are not in the restaraunt business but have access to some other merchandice, service, or anything else that you might be willing to donate, please feel free to contact me. We are hoping to have a wide variety of auction items for both our silent and live auctions.
With the money we hope to raise in this year's auction we will be able to offer tutoring services to twenty students next year. That's twenty students who will have someone working with them twice a week at absolutely ZERO cost to them. I have personally seen how this program changes lives. If you would be willing to assist in any way, please feel free to contact me via pm or through the board. I do have a more formal letter on church letterhead that I can send to any of you if that would help. Let me also assure you that all of the money raised will go directly into the SEAL program to cover the cost of staffing, materials, field trips, etc. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. If you have any questions about the program or ways you can help, please let me know.

Blessings,
Kris Billiter

Kris,

Please contact me by PM. I'm sure we can donate a gift basket, but it'd help to know the kind of crowd you expect.

First of all, Deb you should have a PM.

Second, I would like to clarify something just in case anyone was wondering. Although I am over this program, the money raised in June does not go toward my salary, which is completely covered by the church. The money will go to pay the program director and our group of tutors. I just didn't want it to look like I am asking for donations so that I can get paid :) Thanks again for everyone who is willing to help.
