"What the Matter with the Beer We Got?"

by brian s » Tue Mar 18, 2008 12:10 pm

I'd be offended at the southern stereotypes if this weren't directly from
the Alabama Legislature. Big debate there, since it's currently not lawful to buy beer that's over
6% alcohol. As silly as these things are, we could have it worse.
Hope roger gets to see this,

There is a group in Alabama called Free the Hops that has been fighting to raise the ABV level of beer in Alabama for several years. They thought that they had a really good chance this year of getting it raised, as they had agreement and support of Anheuser-Busch this year, but alas, it looks like they will have to do without for yet another year.

Whenever I look at our liquor laws and think how ridiculous they are, my mantra is "At least I don't live in Alabama"

I think NC got it straightened out somehow. I enjoyed several (too many) high ABV local brews in Asheville last summer. Pisgah Brewing Company in Black Mountain in particular seems to have taken advantage of legal changes and is brewing some really good stuff.

South Carolina just recently passed an increase in the beer ABV last year as well. It seems once North Carolina does something, they follow right behind them. I made the mistake of vacationing there 3 years ago without taking enough beer. After getting through what we were able to take with us, we were at the mercy of the local beer supply at that time. I chose to drink bourbon on the beach rather than beer. I also don't remember much of the vacation from that point other than that their beer selection was horrible.

Things like this are beyond my comprehension. I alternate between stunned and depressed.

If you can listen to that and not laugh out loud and be amazed that someone like the guy at the 5:33 mark on the recording got elected - you are better than I am...

I am not absolutely positive but I do believe AB pulled their support in the 9th hour.
