new forum gripe

by Jeremy J » Mon Mar 17, 2008 2:31 pm

Am I the only one who is driven slightly crazy with one aspect of the new forum software-

When clicking on a link, it takes you to the page without opening it in a new window...that drives me nuts. Is there a way to fix that or change my personal preferences? I like to read linked pages then close them and stay where I was on Hot Bytes...

I just right click the link and choose 'Open in New Tab'.

I'm not saying it isn't a lazy gripe, just saying it would be a simple issue to fix... ;)

I use a track pad a lot, and rightclicking is not as easy as it could be...

Alternatively to right click and choose, your browser should have an option to shift+click, alt+click, or ctrl+click or something to open the link in it's own tab/window. In the version of Internet Explorer I'm locked into at work, it's shift+click to open in a new window. Newer versions may send it to a new tab, Firefox may use a different key altogether, but couldn't tell unless I was home. Unfortunately the only option allowed here is IE 6. Yes... 6...

Unfortunately, opening links directly in a new window by left clicking is no longer an option in the new implementation of the forum software. There were some trade-offs to be made in return for more robust security features, and this was one the programmers (not the admins here) chose.

I agree with Jeremy. It should be set to open in a new window. It is a standard web practice. I'm sure Robin does not like his viewers to leave his site when they click a link. I bet we can get randulo to work on that.

Unfortunately, we have just been through this on another site that randulo and I administrate. It is a non-trivial issue in this newest version of the phpBB software.

Robin is well aware of this (to us) flaw in the new software. We would also love to have it happen, but it is unlikely to in this implementation.

Click the middle mouse button (if you have a wheel, that's it; if you have a true two-button mouse, click both of them at once) or hold down control while you right-click on the link for the thread and it will open in a new tab (or window, depending on how you have your preferences set up). Alternately, you can install something that gives you mouse gestures, right-click and gesture "down".

There has long been a debate between web developers whether links to other sites should automatically open in new windows.

I am in the camp of "Yes, they should open in new windows" with the caveat that there should be some sort of pre-notification to the user that this is what is going to happen. I believe that opening other sites in the same window distracts from the flow of viewing/reading forums/topics.

Now, there are web developers out there who will scream at me that I'm absolutely wrong. And I've read their arguments ad nauseum, none convincing up to this point.

Steve I am with you. Why would you want to leave the site you are on just to reference another site. It is like taking the edition of the encyclopedia back to the stacks just because the article you were reading references another article in another edition. Oh hey I have to go back to the stacks now and get the original article I was reading. Does not make any sense to me.
