Where to eat in Bardstown?

by Karen H » Sat Mar 15, 2008 11:57 am

Help! Need suggestions as to where to eat in Bardstown, KY. We are going there this afternoon and our favorite place has always been Dagwood's which is now closed. There was supposed to be an Mexican restaurant going in there but have not heard how it is. Kurtz is ok but not always consistent. Thanks in advance for any info. :D

I have not been to Bardstown often enough to know the restaurants there, but I do go to Boone's Butcher shop once in awhile. I have seen a place called Tom Pig's on the outskirts and have been curious. Has anyone tried it?
Is that a raw fish in your pocket or are you just glad sashimi?

There is a great restaurant in the first block from the courthouse circle on 3rd. Street. It is owned and run by a Bosnian couple, Kreso's, 218 N 3rd St. 502-348-9594. It includes an old theater where they have entertainment in the summer in conjunction with the regular summer Stephen Foster Story. It is well worth the trip!

We took our extended family to the Talbott Tavern a few years ago. it was one of the worst meals I've ever had in such an establisment. Canned vegetables, overcooked fish, brown iceburg lettuce.. Unless something drastic has happened there, I would caution you not to waste your money.

I also have not had great experiences there. It's too bad though back years ago when I was in high school (and I won't say how long that has been) it was the place to go before Prom and such and the food was really good! I'm a history buff and love old buildings and houses so it would be right up my alley. Oh well. :(

Thanks for the info. We ended up going on to Louisville and eating at Smoketown USA. It had such a good review in Sat. CJ that we just had to try it. What a great choice! Marty was right on about the sides, all we got were wonderful : Spanish rice (spicy), green beans, pot. salad & cabbage slaw (spicy). I got the chicken and my husband got the pork ribs they were great also. We were too full to try the desserts but they looked good. Save those for next trip and there definately will be a next trip. :D

Xavier's is a nice, upscale place to eat in Bardstown. It's been a couple of years since I went (during the Bourbon Festival), but the food was heads above Kurtz's and the Talbot Tavern.

I posted this too late for your trip, but FYI.

BJ's Bar & Grill, 1008 Commerce Blvd., (502) 348-5070
The staff is always nice and the food is good. They have everything from bar food to steaks.

Still Bill's Restaurant & Lounge, 109 Guthrie Dr., (502) 349-2007
This is a rough looking bar that serves fantastic grilled chicken and the best chicken livers in the state. We found it by accident and have never had a bad meal there. The desserts are also great !!
The path to progress, though not always smooth, was blazed by men of restless intelligence, tinkerers seized with a vision of change.

I know this is late, but I lived in Bardstown for a few years.

The only restaurant in town worth going to was Xavier's. I'm not even sure if it's still open, but it was good. I liked the bar a lot, too.

Kreso's had good food, and the owners are very sweet. But they hired teenagers as servers and they were awful. My ex-boyfriend and I used to eat there a lot because he was friends with the owners, but after several horrible experiences, I insisted we never go back.
