Looking for casual, quick, GOOD food, close to Brown Theater

by Ralph B. » Thu Mar 13, 2008 9:52 pm

Going to see a show downtown at the Brown Theater tomorrow evening...and don't have much time to eat beforehand. Got the mom and wife in tow, and neither is interested in something like English Grille. Both wanting something casual, quick, but good...within walking distance of the show.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

How about Cunningham's? It's not too far down on 4th street service is pretty quick, menu has a lot of variety and the prices aren't bad. It's not overly fancy but the food is good, it may be just what you're looking for.

I wonder how late Safier's is open? They would be a great choice. Isn't BBC right down there as well?
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

BBC is also in Theater Square, even closer, if you want real casual food. Also, pre-theater Fourth Street Live restaurants are pretty open, and most are used to offering fast service (while normally I don't go there, we have hit Red Star and the Bourbon restaurant pre-theater on occasion).

Agree that Cunninghams may be the best bet given who you are going with!

Is it the Noche Flamenca show you're attending? We're going to that, too. You're saving me some time deciding where to go for dinner before the show - thanks............. :)

Although not within walking distance you could try the Coach-Lamp on Vine St. by Louisville Stoneware...

It's just up Broadway a few blocks ...

Wouldn't want to walk it in heels but Pestos is one block over on 5th and Jefferson(?) They are small, warm, cozy with great pasta dishes and really inexpensive.

It's Friday. Get the fish sandwich at Cunninghams.

Ralph, all those are great options, just so you know BBC is just across the street from the Brown, the only place that is closer is Freddies where you can have a fine dinner of slim jims and potato chips! No matter which place you pick please show up early enough to enjoy your dinner and drinks so you don't feel rushed. I can't speak for Cunninghams, but at the BBC we usally will fill up and go on a wait just after 7pm. We also have the people who come in at 7:45 and don't understand why there pizza can't be served in under two minutes. If you want a list of things that we can serve super quick let me know and I will PM you.Good luck and enjoy the show

There are many places downtown that are only open for lunch, so you may want to check the hours for the place you choose before going in their direction. I headed down to the Theatre Sqaure BBC last Saturday for dinner and they were closed. I made the same mistake with Pesto's once. I'm not attesting to the hours of either place, only my experience. I may have just had bad timing on both trips, but it was a simple mistake I could have (and wish I had) avoided with a quick phonecall.

I just realized that James must work at BBC and is saying they are open for dinner. So, I don't know what happened. Nonetheless, calling ahead might be a good thing to do.

Beth. Our kitchen hours are Monday through Saturday 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. We are closed most Sundays, except when there is a big show at the Palace or the Brown, then we will usally open for dinner service. Just call before you make the trek downtown on Sundays.

Argh!! The babysitter showed up an hour late...so we had zero time for food before the show. Wendy's drive-thru on the way *blech*

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. BBC was a great recommendation...was there once and LOVED it. Not sure why I didn't think of it.

Yes, we went to see Noche Flamenca. Mom is from Spain, so she really enjoyed herself. Some other Spaniard was in the crowd and kept yelling out "OLE!"...made the evening that much more fun.
