Old Fashioned, Down Home, Made From Scratch, Country Cookin'

Are there such places any more? LIke the places featured on "Diner's, Drive-In's, and Dives"? Alas, Kaelin's By the Track is no more, and the closest that we've really come to is Goose Creek Diner.

I almost made a 'Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives' post this week. Love that show, and was thinking about how we don't really have anywhere that would qualify.

It doesn't have to be a 'Diner', just somewhere unique, that stands out, and has a hardcore local following & 'legend'...........in more of the 'dive' mode.

Genny's diner is terrible. I guess Twig & Leaf is close, but I don't know anyone who is a 'regular' there.

Tolly Ho in Lexington would definitely qualify, as it's 'legendary' for most anyone who attended UK, or lived in Lexington.

Was just talking about the show and how great it is-I do not feel we hav anything close to what they feature on the show-we really do need a good diner with a twist and home cookin'. Last night they featured the diners of Jersey and they all looked fabulous! The one Greek family owned who features pancakes made with just about anything plus traditional greek food-amazing!!!

If you wanna talk about down home country cooking how about the Whistlestop restaurant in Glendale? Not only is the food very country but the building and all of downtown Glendale for that matter is really quaint. My menu favorites there are the fried chicken or catfish.

Here's a link to their website: Whistlestop

Also try any of the "A Nice Restaurant" locations in Southern Indiana. I know they bake all of their bread from scratch. They have fresh cut homefries and made from scratch sausage gravy. They are only open until 2pm. GREAT country breakfast!

After moving here I was really surprised to find such a lack of down home cooking. Unless you consider steam tables, I haven't found much. Dinner is Done is good but again, although not quite a "steam table", not exactly full service either. Perhaps Mr. Z's and D Nalleys are along the right line. The closest Jersey type diner I've run across is Demitri's in Columbus IN. On ocassion my daughter requests "southern food" so I'd love to see some more local suggestions pop up here.

Being from Jeffersonville, I have tried both locations of A Nice Restaurant several times each. I'll not be back, basically. My food each time tasted like it's been heated up right off the Sams club shelf, and devoid of substantial flavor. My impression of their 'country gravy' reminds me of eating Elmers glue in kindergarten, nasty. We must be going to two totally different places to read the above post about this place. And their hours are AM and Lunch only, no supper.

My experience. Mileage for others may vary.

Whistle Stop in Glendale, that's a good one now.

What about Ann's by the River on Market and Spring in Jeffersonville? "Down home" cooking, "real" mashed potatoes, pretty tasty fried chicken, greens, veggies, corn cakes, etc. I've had better pies, but if you have a hankering for rhubarb pie, etc., it will certainly do!

My wife surprised me this evening with carryout from Ann's, meatloaf and fried chicken. I love her...

Huber's. I think it fits all of the criteria listed here. If nothing else, go for the fried biscuits.

There used to be a ton of these type of places around, but they couldn't compete with chains and fast-food outlets. Louisville has never been big on classic "diners", which are much more of an east-coast phenomenon, but we did have some dynamite country cooking restaurants and cafeterias. I miss the Blue Boar.
