Some don't have a choice

by Suzi Bernert » Mon Apr 02, 2007 1:55 pm

I hate it when the smokers say people can choose to go or work elsewhere. Some of the folks in food service DO NOT have a lot of choices where they work, it may be geography (no car or share car) or hours (for child care). There was a period where we had only one car and no child care, so I had to take a job cooking in a bar, late night and use of vehicle. I hated the smoke, was always congested and had to wash my hair at 4:00AM so I could get the smell out (could not sleep with the stench). Also like Linda said, some events are not in places we chose, and some have to decide their health is more important than family or social life.

In my work, I see many folk with chronic lung diseases. It is not a nice way to live (or die - my mother-in-law died of smoking related illnesses, it was slow and painful). The rate of childhood asthma in this area is astronomical. There is research linking asthma to parental smoking. Is it really so imparative to have a smoke that you will let children gasp for air?

I think the old ban was only "full of holes" if you insisted on a 100% comprehensive ban. IMO the old ban resulted in a ton of restaurants going non-smoking, and offered plenty of options for all.
