CJ praises Club Grotto ... and, about that loud phone call

by Robin Garr » Sat Mar 31, 2007 7:30 am

There's not much that's not positive about Marty's Club Grotto review today, in which he awards this Bardstown Road standard a well-earned 3 1/2 stars.

I'd like to open a you-be-the-critic discussion about one point, though: Perhaps I'm misreading him, but - in a report reminiscent of a much less serious version of the loud table that marred his review visit to 610 Magnolia - it seems to me that he may be holding the restaurant responsible for an obnoxious customer's loud, distracting cell-phone call. What do you think? I know we all hate that kind of thing (and I for one would support the wide acceptance of a voluntary "no cellphones" policy at top local restaurants. But absent a stated ban, what can or should the management do about something like this. I'm thinking that the type of people who do this are most likely to take noisy offense at being told to hold it down. What do you think? If you were the restaurateur, what would you do about loud phone calls - or for that matter, loud parties that are obviously bothering other diners?

Hmm . . .I had a completely different take on the Derby call mention. I thought someone at the restaurant was talking on the phone to a potential customer about a Derby reservation. Perhaps having to explain over and over that, yes it is too late to get a dinner reservation for 7:30 on Derby evening. Did the review say it was a cell phone conversation by a diner?
I could have read it wrong.

But in any event, I've also come to despise cell phones in public places. Most people will have the decency to take it outside if they're in the library, church or movies. Most, sadly not all. But if their phone rings in a public place, like a restaurant, dr's waiting room, etc, then it full conversation ahead!

But what still freaks me out the most is people with those semi-permanent attachments to their ears, walking down the street seemingly having a conversation to the air.

No, on re-reading, I just assumed it was a customer, figuring that the management of an upscale restaurant wouldn't possibly do such a thing. Hmmm.

How did we possibly survive back in the says when we couldn't be contacted by anyone at anytime? The first thing I do upon retirement is throw my cell phone into the Ohio river.

Restaurants and cell phones.

by Doogy R » Sat Mar 31, 2007 6:29 pm

I admit to being addicted to my cell phone. I will also admit to being considerate with my use of the cell phone in places such as the cinema, plays, restaurants, etc. I try to never take a call in such places, but sometimes it is unavoidable. To just be courteous, it is possible to answer the phone in a muted voice and move to a more secluded area where one may not interfere with others. I believe it boils down to 2 things. People just don't think about how loud they are on the cell phone, and then you have the ones that are plain old rude. Just my 2 pennies.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

Nope... it seems like a fair review based upon one visit. Does that one time make or break you now? Wow... those fine folks at the C-J(Gannett) can't spring for a follow-up visit to properly record what might happen on another night ? Instead... they now they(Marty and his wife) speculate on what they think might be tasty without ever trying the dish? (let's look at the menu and see what looks good and suggest that!)And then base the whole experience on two dishes. Marty loved the Walleye (Best fish he ever had, but he didn't order it) and then fawned all over the cioppino. Yep, I guess I can sum up a whole dining experience by trying a forkful of my wife's food. I'm not trying to take anything away from Club Grotto at all, but I don't understand the point if you only try a couple of things... Let's get back to why we go out to eat... It's for the food people...or at least that' s what I walk into a restaurant for.

I agree that a proper restaurant review cannot be based on one visit.
