Pig Roaster

by Rick Boman » Wed Feb 27, 2008 2:53 pm

We are planning a luau in the summer and I was wondering if any Chefs out there knew where or who I could rent a pig roaster from. We really don't want to dig a pit. I already checked the usual suspects, like Rent-n-Rave and Ballou's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd almost halfway suggest calling a bunch of barbecue places and see if they have one they could rent you for a day...
if they have more than one (or could spare theirs)... it'd probably be quick, easy cash for them.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

Not meaning to be too particular here, but, if the pig isn't cooked in the ground (tea leaves, burlap and all) can it really be considered Pig Luau?

All you need to do is get your hands on a La Caja China. Perfect roasted pig is guaranteed.

If you pursue this idea Kingsley's may be a good place to start. They used to have a couple and their store on US22 that has been closed so maybe they might be available.

You could contact Fernando or Pedro of Havana Rumba/Mojito's...They have a method using some sort of large box that uses top and bottom heat that sounded pretty fool-proof to me when they explained the process to me. Those guy's definatly know how to cook some pig!!!!

I think this is the unit the guys from Havana Rumba/Mojito's were talking about!!!!!!
For a few hundred bucks I may go 1/2 on it with you so I can use it too...

Dan, if you ever have a pig that has been roasted in one of these, you will be VERY tempted to buy one. It's a miracle that I don't have one sitting in my garage right now. Of course, my wife would kill me . . .

Rick let me know, I let you use my Caja china you will be so happy with your roasted pig. I roast a few pigs during summer in different ways but, by far this is the easies way to do it using La caja china. Fernando

We have had several pig roasts in the past few years and we have rented the cooker from Frank's Meat & Produce,3342 Preston Hwy, 363-3989. They seemed to be reasonable and the cooker did a great job!

Go for it, Rick!

Thanks to all who helped, I am going to either purchase the Caja China for myself and let the club borrow it or I may try Frank's Meats. I appreciate the help, its not like you can look up pig roasters in the phone book.
