Thai Iced Tea...

by Adrian Baldwin » Tue Feb 26, 2008 12:59 pm

...is my new craving!

I've been picking up one to-go from Simply Thai right beside my office a few times per week.

I've wiki'd it, and asked the lady what all goes into it. She told me theirs is Red Tea "boiled almost an entire day" w/ spices, then topped w/ cream.

Anyone ever tried this at home? Recipes? Favorite spots to pick one up in town?

i've got to try this. I like Thai iced coffee but shy away from the tea because of an instinctive aversion to milk in tea. Based on your report, though, I'm willing to give it a try.

I'm a huge iced coffee guy, it's almost all I drink.

This is kinda similar in taste, or at least in 'feel'. Just forget the fact that it's "tea", and think of it as iced coffee. It's got the same creamy/soothing quality, but a little thicker maybe b/c of the cream.

I'm pretty sure you will love it.

On my short list! Thanks, Adrian! I like Simply Thai a lot but think of it as a sit-down place ... what a concept, running by and grabbing an iced tea to go. :)

I used to order this all the time. my friend, who is from thailand, said it's just regular iced tea with sweetened condensed milk poured in.

Robin, it's definitely a sit-down place. For some reason, I just walked in one day and said "do you serve your Thai Iced Tea to go?"

She said, 'sure'.

It's better there, as they serve it in a huge, tall glass.

I love that place. To me, it's the creamiest/best Pad Thai in town. Rather slow though, which makes the fact they also have sushi to munch on.

Thai Iced Tea + Spicy Yellowtail Roll + Pad Thai + That awesome spicy green sauce they have = great comfort meal! :D

Not sure where in Louisville to find dried red Thai Tea, but I have a big bag on hand and would be glad to make you a glass the next time your in Bowling Green. Ok, maybe a little out of the way, but if you find and brew the tea- pretty strong, and sweeten it up to your liking (usually very sweet in most US Thai places I've been). All you need after that is to let it chill, then pour over plenty of ice in a tall pint glass or highball to 3/4- 4/5ths full, then ever so slowly trickle 1/2 and 1/2 from the carton over the top few cubes of ice in the glass to the rim. I love the stunning appearance this creates- who needs a lava lamp when you can create your own Thai tea... So tasty too!
