Free Coffee at Louisville Independant Coffeehouses?

by David Lange » Mon Feb 25, 2008 5:32 pm

Tomorrow, February 26th, all Starbucks locations will be closed for 3 hours for employee retraining seminars. During those 3 hours hundreds of independent coffee shops and small chain locations nationwide are offering free coffee, creating a nationwide movement to drive coffee consumers to local coffeehouses.

Independent businesses are smartly seizing this opportunity to turn the tables and spotlight Starbucks' touted "bold demonstration of commitment," for what it really is, an admission of weakness. Local coffee shops everywhere should band together and join in the promotion for maximum impact.

This would be an excellant opportunity for all of the local coffeehouses in Louisville to provide solidarity and also invite coffee drinkers into their locations to experience local and independant flair. This way they can show Starbucks patrons what they are missing.

Below are the latest list of coffeehouses in the latest "Food & Dining magazine. How many of you are willing to step up for Louisville coffee drinkers?

Atomic Saucer
Bean Street Cafe
Buffalo Madison
Caffe Classico
Coffee Crossing
Coffee Pot Cafe
Day's Espresso and Coffee Bar
Derby City Espresso
Expressions of You
Heine Brothers Coffee
Highland Coffee Co.
Hobknob Roasting Co.
Java Brewing Company
Jackson's Organic Coffee
La Vida Java Coffee Company
Old Louisville Coffee House
Perkfection
Ray's Monkey House & Kid Cafe
Sister Bean's
Sungeros Coffee

If you don't participate, then don't complain about your customers going to Starbacks. Here's a chance to give them something back.

Great idea, David, thanks for posting.

Looks like we might need to tweak that list a little (it's devilish hard to keep them perfect). It appears Blue Mountain got left off the list, which makes no sense since I've reviewed it. And if Coffee Pot Cafe is the one that was on Dixie just out from the Watterson, it's gone.

Any idea which three hours? Will there be a giant coffee cup beamed across the sky, bat light style, when the 3 hours begins? Or an announcement over our emergency broadcast radio system ... "this is radio alpha heine, leave your shelters, let the consumption begin." Or perhaps a barista at every corner, shaking a bell, ye olde coffee shoppe style?

Ironically enough, I just left Starbucks with a free coffee. They didn't have any fresh bold or regular ready, so after I waited about two minutes they gave me my coffee for free.

Do you know what hours the Starbucks are closing?

Regards,

Doug

Derby City Espresso hours:

M-F 9 to 8 (sometimes I open earlier at 8 a.m. - depends on how much I have been drinking the night before :)
Wed open till midnight
Saturdays 10 to 4

We'll be expanding our hours this spring to
M-F 7-11
Sat 9 to 11
and Sun 9 to 5

Look for this change to come in May.
We're also going to be adding in gelato by Gelato Gilberto in May and pizza by the slice and sidewalk tables as soon as spring hits.

Our 1st anniversary is on April 1, AKA APRIL FOOL'S DAY!!! We'll be giving away all kinds of stuff that day and doing .50 espresso shots on the hour. Expect insane beer specials, live music, art, and more fun than you could shake a stick at.
