Robert Szappanos, another meteorologist with the weather service, said freezing rain happens when temperatures in the upper atmosphere are warmer than those on the ground. Moisture falls as rain high up, then freezes when it hits the surface.
Szappanos said the precipitation was expected to alternate between freezing rain and rain last night.
"We always seem to be on the borderline of rain, sleet, freezing rain or snow," Szappanos said. "It's always a tricky forecast."
