Dooley's Bagels now Henry Clay Café

by TanyaD » Fri Feb 22, 2008 9:12 am

It's located in the Henry Clay Bldg. (duh!) at 3rd & Chestnut.

I went this morning and they barely had any bagels and the entire menu has shrunk, but also gotten a little cheaper than Dooley's. Service was efficient and friendly, and the food (so far) tastes about the same.

I love Dooley's. Always liked getting my sandwich on a bagel.

Anyone tried their new 'Pretzel' lineup? Their Breck location has a new menu, filled with pretzels, pretzel rolls, and sandwiches. Never had a sandwich on a pretzel before, but I'd imagine it's quite good! :D

I don't think so. Since this location is in the Henry Clay Building, I assume that Dooley's closed. They had been going downhill for quite a while now, so this wasn't surprising.

I think that Dooley's was owned by the same people that owned the one in Middletown. I noticed this weekend that the Middletown location was under new management. I agree with Tanya, the Henry Clay location went down hill pretty fast.

The Breckinridge location still does a good job and has a decent crowd whenever I'm there (usually mornings). I hope they continue to operate as Dooley's has bagels that most closely resemble the awesome East Coast/NYC bagels.

Whew! That was close. I usually patronize the ones at Breckenridge Ln and at Lime Kiln Rd (formerly the Holiday Manor location)...we could definitely use a Dooley's in Oldham County...might be a business opportunity there. 8)

Does anyone else ever have issues with the coffee at Dooley's Bagels?!? I don't go there very often at all, but anytime that I do the coffee is HORRIBLE. I mean barely tastes better than hot barely flavored water. I know they usually serve Heine Brothers as one of their choices, so I always go for that - but they must just brew it VERY weak or something.

Let me chime in on Dooley's Bagels. Being from the East Coast, I also love sandwiches on a bagel. However, I have been disapointed repeated by Dooley's. Especially Middletown.

We were there about 3 weeks ago, sign indicates new management. The sign on the broken bench said "Do not sit, Broken Bench". Someone added, " for the past 6 months" (or something to that effect). Made us laugh. So true.

The ladies room was a wreck. They were busy with the after church crowd (us included), but it was only 10:30!

The woman at the register was downright rude to my husband when he changed his mind about the size of the coffee he wanted. The bagels are mediocre and I think the sandwiches are overpriced. You get a sandwich, nothing else. No pickle, no chips...nothing. And bad atmosphere to boot.

We will not be returning unless someone tells me that everything (food, appearance)is better.

Lori,

Funny that you mentioned the broken bench at the Middletown Dooley's: I drive down there rarely and know for a fact that it's been broken for a least 2 months, probably much longer. The new management in my opinion has been a turn for the even worse (things were a little shaky before).

I really feel for you showing up in a busy time, can't imagine them trying to handle a crowd. The last time I went down there I tried getting a sandwich at 2:00. 45 minutes before closing, but they'd already turned off the grill. Only customer ordering in the place and it took 15 minutes to get a cold roast beef sandwich. The cashier didn't know how to ring my standard order and they've down-graded from their great loaded potato salad. I used to love their sandwiches every once in a while, but now I'll only go monthly to stock up on bagels for my freezer.

Any one know what happened to Dooley's in general? The Holiday Manor one closed, and the one by the Bristol on Hurstbourne got new management, also worse, and then closed. Why so many problems? Are they selling off formerly corporate run locations to inexperienced operators or something?

The original owner has moved somewhere up-east and has kinda left the stores to their own devices. The Breck store is still the closest thing to the original vision. The Middletown and downtown stores were owned by the same lady ,who promptly ran both of then into the ground along with the one that used to be on Hurstbourne. The Middletown store is under new ownership.

Thanks for the explanation, Jeff. It's such a shame: we used to really love the Dooley's at Holiday Manor. I'm not sure where I'll go if the Middletown store closes: while they are not quite up to NY Bagels, they are the closest thing I've found in town.

The Holiday Manor location relocated nearby to Lime Kiln Lane (in a little shopping center where Tokyo Japanese Reastaurant is).

Melissa,

Thanks for the info, I had no idea it still existed. Things had gone downhill with the new owner (including at least one temporary closure) and I was no longer in that area everyday (my daughter used to go to Chance School just down the street). So when I saw it was gone, I just assumed it was gone for good-not moved.

How is it?
