Best Area Philly Cheesesteak?

by Adrian Baldwin » Mon Feb 18, 2008 4:57 pm

...and before you start in with "Nothing compares to a real one in Philly", I know. That's the point of this thread.

Surely, there are a few that come close, though.

My favorite so far is probably Spinelli's, wit (Whiz).

Danny Mac's had a good one, w/ a slightly different spin.

I also enjoy the 'Great Steak & Potato company's version at the mall, and they now offer Whiz as well.

What are your favorites? Any local bar/grill server up a dandy?

Or homemade versions? I am actually craving some Steak-Umms right now! :D

Spinelli's strikes me as clearly the winner for authenticity, although as a sometime New Yorker, I don't know nuttin' about Philly. ;)

Good question. I'm guessing not, but maybe one of the Seviche Bistro folks or other neighbors can clue us in.

Haven't seen any indication of Spinelli's opening...

And as a former New Jersey girl with Philly roots (my dad), there is no such thing as a Philly Cheesesteak in Kentucky....Attitude is a large part of the experience. :D (Haven't tried most of the pretenders).

I am a New Yorker, and think that Penn Station has my favorite...I know that the tradition is with the Whiz. I simply don't care for it. I like provolone much more.

I'm going to have to put in a vote for Penn Station as well. Although I usually get the artichoke sandwich, the cheesesteak is my second choice.

I really like Spinelli's too.

I'd have to go with Spinelli's as well. And, I hate to correct you Adrian, but, I'm almost certain that "wit" refers to onions, not whiz.

My mom and dad live right down the street from Danny Mac's, and I told them that numerous LH posters raved about his Philly cheesesteak. A few days later mom called and said, "Boy, were those food people right. Danny Mac's Philly was awesome!" Now, i need to get there and give it a try. Additionally, my dad raves about how good of a guy and how customer focused Danny Mac is.

TanyaD, I'm curious, what is his "special way?"

He makes mine with cream cheese. I was there the day he was testing the recipe and I really, REALLY liked it! Now I bring my own cream cheese when I want one.

You may laugh, but on pure TASTE, it doesn't get much better than Waffle House's Texas Cheesesteak (with egg).

Damn, I love that sandwich.

Folks, this thread is supposed to be about Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches and the original poster just wanted to know where to get a good one in town. All the sandwich's discussed me be great sandwich's in their own right but they're not Philly Cheesesteaks! Philly sandwich's do not contain Provolone, cream cheese, eggs or whatever. This thread is becoming like the Hot Brown thread where seafood, vegetables, etc. have have been added to a classic dish without changing the name. Of course we don't even want to start talking about Martinis and all the stuff being put in them these days!
