Louisville has emerged as the winner of Bushmills Irish Whiskey's "Twin City of Bushmills in America" contest.
In celebration of its 400th anniversary, the whiskey company searched for a city that resembles the town of Bushmills, Ireland, in terms of pride in history and heritage, craftsmanship and hospitality.
Boston, Mass., and Portland, Maine, were the other finalists in the competition.
Bushmills chose Louisville because the city celebrates its history and heritage with festivals like Octoberfest, Irish Fest and Worldfest, and by giving its neighborhoods names like Germantown and Irish Hill.
Louisville also demonstrates its craftsmanship by producing bourbon and Louisville Slugger bats and its hospitality by welcoming thousands for the Kentucky Derby every year, the company said.
More than 55,000 online votes were cast during the contest, according to a news release.
This morning, Bushmills master distiller Gordon Donoghue will present Louisville Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson with a $40,000 grant, which must be used for preservation and advancement of the city's traditions and culture, and for programs that promote responsible drinking.
Bushmills Irish Whiskey is a subsidiary of Diageo, which also owns the Guiness, Smirnoff, Baileys, Cuervo, Crown Royal and Captain Morgan alcoholic beverage brands.
