3 new bakeries: European, kolache, Asian

by Rich S » Wed Jan 28, 2026 4:18 pm

European Patisserie opened recently at 203 N. Hurstbourne Parkway (where Vinaigrette Salad Kitchen used to be). It seems to have an Eastern European focus; one of the online reviews calls it a Ukrainian cafe, I can’t find a website, but you can see some photos and reviews at the Google listing.

American Kolache plans to open in February at 2306 Bardstown Road. It will serve both traditional kolaches, with a sweet fruit filling, and savory ones filled with meat, cheese, egg, etc. American Kolache is the national franchise version of St. Louis Kolache, a small chain in Missouri.

Purple Yum Asian bakery will be opening at 1850 S. Hurstbourne Parkway (in the shopping center with Shalimar and Liquor Barn). This will be the bakery’s second location; the first one is in Lexington. The menu includes mochi doughnuts and some unusual buns, with fillings including curry, taro, ube, red bean and pork floss.

Purple Yum has had a sign up for several months, but it didn’t apply for a building permit until this week, so it will be a while before it opens.

Interesting stuff, and thanks for the post. I recall a Kolache Factory, a small chain operation) out Breckenridge Lane between Hikes Point and Buechel a few years ago. It was actually pretty good, but I think the combination of location and unfamiliarity with Czech food doomed it from the start.

I may be misremembering, but wasn't there a Kolache place on Hurstbourne in the little strip behind where Cattleman's is now? I think it was back when Max & Erma's was still there. Glad to see some new sweet (and savory) places like this opening around town!

Michelle, that's the one I was thinking about. The Kolache Factory. The Nebraska-based chain still exists, but the Louisville branch is long gone.

Sullivan Bakery was selling several types of kolache went I went there recently. They looked good. I'm not sure if they are a regular item.
