Locals Food Hub and Pizza Pub

by James Natsis » Fri Oct 18, 2024 11:19 pm

I happened to stumble across this place this evening driving down from the Germantown neighborhood. I don't think I've ever gotten out of my car along that part of Broadway. But it was worth the effort.

They are located at the corner of East Broadway and Logan St. in a very interesting historic building that is the process of rehabilitation in steps. The food hub just opened a few days ago following a soft opening event.

The space has a lot of character housed in such a nice, solid brick historic structure. There is a store at one end that, leads into the pizzeria long counter and smaller room, that leads into a larger spacious open dining hall that is conducive to intermingling with or observing other folks lined along a variety of table lengths and arrangements. There is also outdoor seating in a cordoned off area mainly along Broadway. As the name indicates, the grocery products and all of the food are locally sourced. Trellis Brewery also had a beer stand inside.

Its an interesting location that actually has potential since it is en route between downtown and Germantown, Nulu, and the Highlands. Trellis is not too far up Logan St and Paris Pointe is not far either.

I had eaten shortly before entering so I didn't eat anything. But its definitely worth stopping in and supporting them. I spoke to a few people there--the floor manager and the owner . They feel bullish about the location and the potential. The owner indicated that it was worth the risk to get in early. They have a location in Frankfort which apparently has worked out well enough to expand into Louisville. localsfoodhub.com

Thanks for the scouting report! It sounds fascinating ... and an interesting balance between potential and the risk that early adopters face. I'll make a note to check it out the next time I'm in the area.

WDRB-41 ran a piece on it, possibly shared from Business First, which seems to cross-post some stories to 41:

New grocery option in Smoketown provides fresh, local food in Louisville food desert

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Smoketown neighborhood in Louisville now has new access to fresh, local food.

Locals Food Hub and Pizza Pub, at 822 East Broadway, is a spot for people to grab a bite to eat and have access to a small grocery.

"I was impressed with the variety of the meat selection and there was more herbs available than I was expecting," said Philip Flarsheim, a Louisvillian visiting the store Monday.

Jevonie Jones not only lives in the Smoketown neighborhood but is also an employee at Locals Food Hub and Pizza Pub.

"People have a lot more access to food, different varieties of food, fresh food, healthier foods," Jones said.

She said this food hub and pizza pub concept is filling a need in the area.

"We don't necessarily have access up this way -- this part of the city -- since they took the Kroger grocery store off Second Street. But we've been kind of needing a grocery store for the last five years," she said.

Co-owner Birch Bragg started the business in Frankfort in 2021. He said the idea for the business model came about in a post-COVID world.

"When globalized supply chains all but fell apart," Bragg said. "It was one of the first times a lot of people in the United States experienced empty grocery store shelves."

Bragg wanted to support local, Kentucky farmers and increase access to their foods.

"We can impact food access initiatives here in Smoketown in a really meaningful way," Bragg said.

The expansion from Frankfort to Smoketown comes in large part from a federal grant through the USDA.

"The sole purpose of the funds from that grant is to help open a grocery store or facilitate food access in a food desert," Bragg said. "Put that food right in the middle of neighborhoods that need it the most."
