It’s hard to go wrong at Namnam Cafe

It’s hard to go wrong at Namnam Cafe

Spicy yellow curry flavors add modest heat to rice noodles and your choice of chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, tofu (pictured) or veggies.

I really like little Namnam Cafe in St. Matthews, but to be honest, the last time I was there it wasn’t easy to concentrate my full attention on the fare.

What was the problem? That was in mid-March of 2020, just days before Gov. Andy Beshear ordered Kentucky restaurants and bars closed to indoor dining.

When we arrived just a few days before that, everyone was well aware of the coming pandemic, and not entirely sure if everyone was going to survive. I’m generally mellow, but just about everyone tenses up a bit when confronted with our own mortality.

So, although I enjoyed the experience and wrote about it fondly, it crossed my mind the other day that it wouldn’t hurt to take a fresh look without a flight-or-fight response going on in my head.

We got back to Namnam Cafe the other day, and yep, this little place is still comfort Vietnamese food for me. ...

Noise Level: Despite parties at several tables and an air conditioner laboring next to our seats, noise levels remained in the 65dB range, posing no barrier to conversation.

Accessibility: Part of the restaurant is accessible to wheelchair users, but the entrance door is heavy, much of the dining area is down a short step, and a narrow hall back to the unisex restroom would be hard to negotiate in a wheelchair.

I get how in some of these older neighborhoods the buildings just weren't built for accessibility and there's nothing that can be done at a reasonable cost. And maybe it makes sense why they can't deal with some of these issues when you actually see the restaurant. But a heavy door, and a step? It's hard to believe they couldn't do something about that.

I hear you, Mike, although they're certainly not alone in the heavy door department. I can't tell you how often my wife will grab a door to a restaurant or other business, give it an ineffective yank, and then turn the job over to me. :)

As for the step down, the conversion of a patio into an all-weather room is something that was clearly done on a very low budget indeed. It's not a full step, it's more like a one-inch threshold. But even that would be a barrier to all but the most athletic wheelchair users. The reason I don't declare the place inaccessible is that there are also several tables in the original building which gives access from the parking lot and entrance.

The green curry, ask for it hot, is the best curry dish in town. I revel in it at least once per week. David Truong is truly one of the nicest people in the restaurant business. The vermicelli bowl with chicken is my beautiful bride's number one. Outstanding food and service.
