Barry Bagels

by James Natsis » Wed May 15, 2024 8:07 am

I read that Barry Bagels is swooping into Louisville soon. My guess is that they'll do to bagels what Panera Bread has done to baguettes, bagels, pastries, etc.---banalize the product to reach a mass audience.

To be fair, I'm not familiar with their products. But I see that they are a growing franchise and wonder if anyone has had their fare yet.

NB: I'm sure the bagel purist are pretty pumped about this!

Thanks, I think, for the advice! Thinking out loud, we've had Bruegger's around for a long time, and local chains like the defunct Dooley's and Breadworks, all of which I think make bagels that fit your description. We won't even mention the original Nancy's, although I guess I just did. My point being that mediocre bagels are hardly a new thing in Louisville, but with a few newer spots actually rising toward the New York-style goal, we're more able to be selective. Am I right about this?

Yeah, that's a good assessment. We can't stop progress and when it comes to feeding millions of people, compromised quality is a price we pay for quantity.

I'm not diametrically opposed to Panera baguettes, for example. At times, it is convenient and decent enough. But when I get my hands on a BlueDog or Sullivan Bakery baguette the difference is clear. Same thing for good croissant-based pastries such as at Sullivan vs. mediocre croissant products---a clear difference but willing to concede when necessary.

It is likely the case for bagels for those who know the difference.

Barry’s Bagels will open a new store in the fall at 4123 Oechsli Ave. in the Galleria of St. Matthews, which is located at the corner of Oechsli Avenue and Thierman Lane, just north of Shelbyville Road.

Barry’s Bagels is moving into a more than 1,600-square-foot space was formerly occupied by Havana Rumba.

Are we talking about the almost completely rebuilt strip mall where the roof fell in thanks to (apparent) owner neglect?

Yes, but I can tell that's where it's going!
