Indian replaces Italian on Hurstbourne

by Richard S. » Thu Apr 25, 2024 9:18 pm

Milantoni Restaurant, which was located in an old Taco Bell location on Hurstbourne near the 64 off-ramp, has been replaced by Umiya Indian Restaurant. I wasn't familiar with Umiya, but apparently they moved there from a location off Plantside Drive. I had eaten at Milantoni two or three times. The food was decent but not outstanding.

Something that probably worked against Milantoni was access. You had to navigate a pothole minefield behind the gas station to get there, and trying to make a left turn onto Hurstbourne upon leaving was risky to say the least.

We went to Milantoni occasionally but we won't be going to Umiya.

Something about Umiya in particular or Indian food in general, Mark?

I love Indian food and will definitely check it out. It's also fascinating how Hurstbourne seems to be turning into an India strip with a bunch of restaurants and groceries from Bombay Grill in the north to Honest Indian/now Sankalp on the south end.

Indian in general, I'm not sure why but neither my wife nor I like it at all. Like almost every other kind of food but...

One small correction. That building was originally a Wendy's (that sunroom on the front is a clue). It's been an odd assortment of things since, and yes, the location is terrible. Milantoni started off great. They had a pasta dish I absolutely loved. They served food to the homeless when their refrigeration equipment died. Then within the past year, it all fell apart. I don't think they could keep staff. They started cutting corners on food as soon as they did a big remodel.

I don't like Indian food enough to deal with Hurstbourne traffic at that particular spot and those abominable potholes as mentioned. I'm pretty sure this will become yet another kiss of death (tm) location for Louisville. I hope they're not paying outrageous lease rates. Besides, within less than a mile, there's Eggholic, Shalimar, and Shreeji with better ingress and egress.
