Ellen, I've seen that at a few places ... trying to remember, maybe North of Bourbon? Not sure.
Anyway, it's entirely optional, but a gesture that I'm sure the hard-working kitchen staff really appreciates. Especially if it's in the form of cash that they can use for a round or whatever they want to.
