A few Nulu observations

by James Natsis » Thu May 11, 2023 3:44 pm

I took a stroll in Nulu this afternoon. Weather was ideal, people are out, and the place feels good. I'll mention a few things in particular:

1) The Bob Dylan folks who first discovered the old church site at Market and Hancock must have done a series of backflips out of joy! The previous folks invested tons of money to get the site to where it is currently. It is ideal and it is easy to see why they snubbed Nashville for "Ourville." I've been inside before and today walked the grounds coming in form the back. It is incredible! Add to that a blockbuster location and probably at a price for a country music song---they hit gold! I never got into your music, Bob, but I welcome you, your music, your art, and your bourbon to Louisville!

2) Hotel Genevieve is truly a cool place that fits, and even helps define the vibe in Nulu. It has a certain New Orleanesque feel all the way around with a fantastic, laidback upstairs terrace and bar that will go over well. My main qualm--the place was build with the cheapest friggin materials on the market! What a shame. They created such a fitting, unique vibe, but the poor building materials give off an off-the-highway discount hotel annoyance. My gosh. These folks will regret this some day. That said, it will still be popular.

3) Work is being done on the former Toast on Market site. Any ideas of what's going in?

We went to the rooftop bar at Hotel Genevieve last Sat. The drinks were good to great, but small and $16 each.

Sake A Go Go moving into old Toast location

Sake A Go Go is scheduled to open at 620 E. Market St. this fall. The 3,000-square-foot space was previously occupied by Toast on Market, which closed in May 2022.

Sake A Go Go is a new concept from Kevin Grangier, the restaurateur behind the Village Anchor, Le Moo and Grassa Gramma.

Charles Reed, owner of Melba's Culinary Campus, announced back in October 2022 that he planned to relocate his popular breakfast and lunch restaurant from Downtown Louisville to the first floor of the East Market Street property, which will also feature residential housing. But his plans seem to have changed.
