Italian cream cake?

by Mike L » Tue Apr 25, 2023 6:27 pm

I haven't had a great Italian cream cake in a long time. I think Le Gallo Rosso used to have a great one. Does anyone know a bakery or restaurant with a really good Italian cream cake in town?

Mike, I can't testify from experience with the dish, but Silvio's has one on the menu for $12. Page down to "Desserts" on the menu page.

Ciao had a great one made by the chef's mother, but haven't been there in a while . . .

Italian Creme is one of my very favorite desserts! I also enjoyed Le Gallo Rosso’s!

Cheddar Box (in Chenoweth Square- not the “Too”) has delicious Italian Creme, but I’ve heard (though haven’t personally confirmed) that they’re currently without a baker so aren’t able to make it! I know the Cheddar Box in Middletown is a different business, but I really like their desserts and they have it- pretty sure I tried it- it’s been awhile.

Kroger Deli actually makes an excellent version. I’ve taken it to church potluck, and people wondered who baked it!

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone!

Is it considered bad form to order just a couple pieces of cake to go at a restaurant like Ciao or Silvio's?

I'd call up and ask! First, even though I haven't been to Ciao in a while they occasionally used to run out, so you'd be sure they had it, and then I think it'd just depend on their inventory.

We have gone in just for dessert & coffee with no problems, but haven't tried carry-out.

It makes sense to me that a restaurant would want to make sure dine-in customers ordering a full meal get taken care of first.

Mike, calling and asking is always a good thing, but in my experience, restaurants are happy to make a sale, any sale, especially in the current food economy.

I wish I would have seen this sooner. My very favorite (and most authentic, imo) is the Italian cream cake from Sweet Stuff in New Albany. A very delicious southern style cake. Theirs taste just like mine. (and mine is delicious!)

it'd only be bad form if you didn't pay 'em!
