Listen, everyone. I'm sure a lot of you feel like I do, that no matter what has gone down in the past or recently, Robert has all our sympathies.

What I'd like to know is if anyone besides me might be interested in making some food for the family and taking it to the funeral home tomorrow. I would be willing to drive around (within reason) and collect anything you guys want to make and deliver it to the funeral home tomorrow. I have already cleared this with the funeral home, they do have a small kitchen and a place to put the food...also I asked if there's any food there already, and the director said just a couple sandwich trays and a dessert or two (today), but nothing major. He did caution me that we would need to bring plates and utensils, so maybe someone could donate that.

I would like to make a potato salad and again I would gladly drive around town to collect the stuff and deliver it to the funeral home.

Post here or PM me if you'd like to make something and we'll arrange a time for me to pick it up. Ideally I'd like to deliver the stuff between 2 and 4 tomorrow, so I'd need to see those of you contributing something tomorrow between noon and one. If you don't want to cook maybe you could contribute the plates, napkins or utensils.

Who's with me? I've never met Robert, but we're a community, right? And we're all about food. Let's make some food for Robert and his daughter. We've all been through the bereavement process and we all know how grateful we are when someone shows they care, and what better way to show it than with the gift of food!

That's a wonderful gesture, Marsha, and my hat is off to you for your generous and giving spirit. We're down in Florida at my Mom's place this weekend, so I haven't been hanging around the forum much, but I've got nothing but praise for you for taking the lead on this.

Since we're away and I can't do a food contribution, but would like to help in some way, may I help with your gasoline/car experiences? I'll gladly cough up a share (or more) in coin of the realm or a decent bottle of wine for you and your SO.

Robin, that's awesome, and thank you. Gas money would be great for driving to Middletown!

And hey, I'll buy a card and anyone contributing can sign it as I pick up the food (Robin I will sign for you and Mary).

Hat's off to you Marsha for your generosity and thoughtfulness. This is exactly what this community of people is about. We can argue and complain until purple in our faces but when things come to terms we are all on the same page. Thank you for what you are doing.

Prost!

Marsha,

I'm in with a dessert: I'll do some kind of bar cookie or something. I'm on the far East End (think Summit). Let me know when is good to come by or I'll meet you somewhere.

If they can serve any purpose, I have a ton of 4 oz styrofoam cups at my house that I'm very happy to donate. Also Plastic soup spoons.

Deb, that's great. I think a sleeve or two of coffee cups would be great, and a few spoons wouldn't hurt. Someone's already PMd me about plates so we are covered!

This is all great. So far, I have two desserts including yours, a deli tray, my potato salad and all the utensils we need. I will be driving out to the east end between 2 and 4 tomorrow, going straight down Shelbyville Road to Middletown. PM me for my cell phone number and/or my home number. I'll need your phone number and I'd like to know how far from Shelbyville Road y'all are...

Gary, Robert's wife Dawn died; she'd been ill for some time, so it's not a total surprise. Robin split this part of the thread off from the original one about her passing to draw more attention to the mini-food drive I'm organizing here. You'll find the other thread further down the page.

I'm just back from the funeral home - everything went really well, I had no problems with all the myriad directions to everyone's houses and places of business. Nice sunny day to be driving around town, too.

I wasn't going to try to introduce myself to Robert on a day like today, but - he found me! I was putting the stuff out in the lounge when I heard someone gasp and say "I recognize you from your picture!" Robert and his daughter were far from alone, there were a lot of family and friends there. I gave them the card some of us had signed (with a printout of the earlier condolences thread folded up inside - thanks for that suggestion, Carol C!)

One of the things donated was a deli tray from Kroger. Robert pointed to it, cocked and eyebrow, and said with a grin: "You do know Kroger is a chain, right?" I told him I was aware of that, but "I made the potato salad myself!" I also told him if I'd known his sense of humor was going to be intact today, I'd have brought him a well-done steak.

Robert and his daughter Amanda were very appreciative (although I think Amanda was having a hard time figuring out why a total stranger would pack a bunch of food out to Middletown - but I think she was starting to get her head around it by the time I left.)

I won't list all the people that I picked things up from, you know who you are and Robert knows from the condolences thread that far more than those are thinking of him and his family today. But I want to say thanks from me, as well. It's nice to be part of a warm-hearted, generous net community. That was a great bunch of food to get to deliver. Thank you all so much - I know it was short notice and I'm sure I would have had more pick-ups than I could have handled if it hadn't been the weekend when site traffic is slower.

And, a last bit of good news: Robert's been keeping up with the forum, and I think we may be hearing from him soon.

I would like th thank Bill Andrews...Marsha L...Robin Garr and all of you that cared. I could not believe the kindness you all expressed to me and my family. This was a hard battle that Dawn had to go through and I knew last May the it did not look winable...but together we battled the journey and road that we had ahead of us. From the begining to the end I was at her side as her husband and caregiver...She was in my arms as he took her last breath a few night ago. I just kept assuring her that it is OK to go Night Night. I know that Monday will be the hardest so far as she will be laid to rest...and I will have more in the days and months to come....but it is nice to know that I have friends like all of you that care. I guess at the end of the day no matter what we like or dont like we are all Brothers and Sisters of God at the end of the day...I am going to have to end right now as my tears are not allowing me to type much longer....Thanks Robin for letting me post this reply.
