Happy Lent, and thanks for all the fish

Easter is late this year, and working backwards, that means that Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday are a little behind schedule, too. Fat Tuesday is coming up on March 1, and Ash Wednesday, beginning the penitential season of Lent, arrives next week, on March 2.

In other words, if you’ve been craving fried fish a little more than usual lately, there may be a reason for that: In a more typical year, Lenten fish-fry season would already be well under way.

Lent, of course, is the 40-day-long liturgical season leading up to Easter, during which time many people undertake modest symbolic sacrifices such as eating fish rather than meat on Fridays.

Lenten sacrifices are widely seen as a Catholic tradition, based on centuries when fasting practices including abstinence from meat was not just a suggestion but a requirement. But even after the Reformation, several mainline Protestant churches – Episcopalians, Lutherans, and Methodists in particular – continue observing Lent. including the option of taking on some form of abstinence as a spiritual practice.

Of course, in Louisville we don’t wait until Lent to enjoy seafood and fish. Fried cod, scrod, and other mild white fish on rye bread or a bun is a local tradition that goes back to the 19th century, and it’s just about as typically Louisville as the Hot Brown, benedictine, or modjeskas. Go north and you’ll have a hard time finding fried fish in a sandwich. Head south, and your sandwich bears catfish.

Historians trace this local affection to a predominantly Catholic wave of immigration during much of the 1800s, a wave of migrants dominated by Germans but also filled with plenty of Irish and smaller Italian and Lebanese Catholic streams. They were required to eat fish on Fridays by church tradition, and local bars and restaurants quickly sprang up to serve them.

Fed by speedy L&N express trains rushing seafood and fish from the Gulf in refrigerator cars full of ice, this inland town became a fish-loving city despite our distance from salt water. And if the fish got here just a bit past prime , frying it crisp and slathering it with tartar sauce or spicy cocktail sauce may have been more palatable than serving it delicately au naturel.

Of course, crunchy, sizzling, crunchy golden-brown fried fish is delicious and hardly penitential, and the same goes twice over for fancy fish dinners and seafood. Fish is healthful, too, high in protein and relatively low in calories. Even fatty fish like tuna and salmon are rich in the omega-3 fatty acids that – like red wine – seem to be beneficial to heart health.

So as time went by and the 20th century moved toward the 21st, fish on Fridays seemed less penitential than ever, and church rules gradually relaxed. But fish is popular all year ‘round, even when you’re not required to eat it. Many Roman Catholic churches offer community fried fish dinners on Fridays during Lent, beginning Friday, March 4 this year and continuing through the Friday before Holy Week, April 8.

For the last couple of years, the pandemic has forced some changes in practice. Some churches called off their fish fries for the duration, and others went to takeout or curbside service only. Only about two dozen of the Archdiocese of Louisville's 100-plus parishes had Lenten fish fries last year; but that's still a lot of crispy fried fish down the hatch.

This year the number is up to 33 throughout the Archdiocese, which covers the western half of Kentucky, including about 25 in Metro Louisville. My favorite fish has been, and always will be, the Irish Rover. In all my travels around the world that is the best Fish and Chips I have ever had ! Also It has been consistent for the the past 25 years I have been going there ! Every time I have fried fish I compare it to the Irish Rover, and nothing else compares !

I'm an old (former) Catholic boy who grew up going to fish fries and, I've gotta say, these days I find most of them mediocre at best. Pre-Covid we'd try one or two recommended ones each Lent and I was usually underwhelmed.

The Irish Rover's fish and chips are the best in town, IMHO. If I want more traditional fried fish it's usually Fish House because it's close to home and I can carry out. Back in the old days when we actually ate at restaurants we'd go to Sal's or to Passtime in Jeffersontown. Both of those are a little too far from home to transport fried food.

(This is an old Lent thread posting from last year but I thought I would resurrect it for a single post.)

Finally made it to St. Aloyisus in Pee Wee Valley for their fish fry before the end of Lent. They offer a drive through as well as dine in and, every Friday, they are packed. I opted for the drive through. The line of cars wrapped the church on 3 sides and creeped over the tracks to Larange Rd. but seemed to move at a steady pace. From entering the line at 5:10 to getting my food and leaving was right at 1 hour. The time from placing my order to getting my food was maybe 10 minutes. I thought for an event that only occurs once a year that they did a remarkable job at handling the crowd and getting everyone taken care of. (I was in line at 5:10 pm and by then there were 200 cars in front of me. I have no idea what time they started to que. and that's just outside. The dining room was packed as well.) Kudos to their organizer.
I ordered a senior citizen's dinner (Sandwich, 2 sides- I opted for onion rings and hush puppies + a canned drink =$11.50. I added a rolled oyster for $5.)

The sandwich was a solid A with a thick cod fillet perfectly cooked.

Onion rings were a C only because they were a run of the mill, offering and seemed to have been improperly cooked in oil not quite hot enough.

Hush puppies were a B. Golf ball sized, perfectly cooked, not greasy but I did not like the seasoning used in the batter. (But that's just me. I'm a 'just fried cornbread' kind of person.

The rolled oyster was the best surprize and I gave it an A-. It was ALMOST (so close!) like the rolled oysters from Mazzoni's, If there were more cracker crumbs in the batter they would have nailed it. But it was ideally cooked with the inside being just a wee bit on the mushy side because of the oyster juice. So good!
