Champions Sports Restaurant and Bar

by Art Maley » Thu Feb 07, 2008 8:42 pm

A friend and I met at Champions last Saturday to watch the games and grab a bite. That turned out to be a bad choice.

My first complaint? An $8 Bloody Mary.

My pal ordered a Hot Toddy that came with a dollop of soap.

I ordered a Hot Brown sandwich that ranks as the worst I've ever encountered. The turkey was from a turkey roll. The sauce was bland and flavorless except for the generous inclusion of garlic powder. The tomatoes were sliced paper-thin and were so pale in color only their shape gave away their origin. It was topped with shredded parmesan. The server was totally inattentive and untrained. While I wasn't expecting a 5-Star experience, most of the better hotels in Louisville offer up some good food and service.

Needless to say, I won't be returning.

I am willing to bet that after your review the place will be booming. Good or bad, people will want to know is it really as you stated. I've dined there several times myself. Food ain't great, ain't bad. Sure ain't as horrible as you said. I like Blu better.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I visited Champions one time, and it will also be the last time. The food was awful. I had the cheeseburger, which was one of the worst non fast food burgers I have ever had, and my wfe had something so forgetable that I can't rememer what it was. I also agree that the service was definetly lacking, as the server only checked on us twice the entire time we were there. Once to take our order and once to bring the check. Someone else brought out the food.

Yes I was the other at the table. Of course you knew we were heading that way after the Bodega at Felice Sat. Art forgot to mention the floors were dirty and the overhead projectors need some work. They were completely yellowed out.

See you and Todd tonight,

I can understand if you were talking about the main restaurant in the Marriott, but it's a SPORTS BAR! It's not known for food, it doesn't advertise food, and you don't go there for food!

I think the other comment about the projectors needing adjustment are more critical . . . Champions advertises going there to watch any game in the country while drinking beer and having fried finger food, and provides it as a draw for conventioneers not to leave the hotel - I wouldn't expect the food to be good, and when we tried it the food wasn't, but it gave us exactly what was advertised (the projectors worked well then)

You're so correct the food shouldn't be wonderful (AKA five star) but it should be palatable. Also food and drink prices should be a reasonable and an $8.00 Bloody Mary certainly doesn't fit that definition. I realize its downtown in a nice hotel but this price is a Manhattan price not a Louisville price! If they want to keep people in their hotel and have others visit it they need to make some changes.

We went a few weeks ago for UL game and UK-Florida...the food was very disappointing, but at least palatable...It was the drinks that were outrageous....well bourbon and coke or sprite or whatever your flavor...were 7 bucks each...for short glasses...full of ice. I couldn't believe it when I got my bill. And this is during local games when most places run specials on their drinks. I know it's a hotel bar/restaurant but that is outrageous. I will not be back. Next time downtown I will check out the Icebreakers place for a game which has really nice TVs. Only been for lunch thus far.

Recent Visit...

by Doug W » Fri Feb 08, 2008 5:01 pm

I was at Champions recently for a UofL Coaches luncheon. Coach Pitino did his thing with Terry Meiners and so forth.

The food was a little lower than mediocre. It was sort of a business lunch thing (we were sponsors), so it wasn't a beer moment, but that sure would have helped the food.

The ribs tasted like they were taken right out of the plastic and nuked. I didn't really try anything else.

Stick to the drinks- depending on price. I did look longingly at the taps which did include some local BBC offerings.

Cheers,

Doug.
