Darnell Ferguson's new restaurant

by Mark R. » Sun Oct 10, 2021 7:16 pm

Seeing the earlier post about the new seafood restaurant "Captain Crab Seafood Boil" opening made me think that nothing had been posted about new restaurant that Darnell Ferguson is opening, "Tha Drippin Crab" here's a link to the article on WLKY: https://www.wlky.com/article/celebrity- ... t/37910842
It will be interesting to see it with this good and popular as Super Chefs is of course unlike Robin will need a passport to visit it! :D

I can see this place from my desk. I wish them well and hope they can make it. I'd love to have a place that I could walk to for lunch, but I think the menu will be too expensive and limited to keep a lunch crowd.

The few menu items that they have posted are out there.

Today was:
Smoked Salmon Lasagna with a Deep Fried Lobster Tail and a Truffle Chimichurri.

I can't see this dish going for less than $25-30.

Here’s the menu. I may swing by and try the shrimp po boy or the tacos.

Agreed.

We should start an over/under on how long it lasts. I'll start...1 yr.

I've driven by there several times over this past year. The most recent just a few weeks ago when he had the sign up but not yet opened. I understand some of the points made here. It will be a challenge. However, I feel that it is the right time for the right type of place and restauranteur to make a mark along that burgeoning corridor. There has been a lot of good work done in that surrounding area and many folks (from near and elsewhere) are anxious to support such an endeavor. I'm confident that he will play a role in setting a trend in that area. It is in all of our best interests to celebrate the growth of a new dining scene in town!

I agree. I've worked at 13th and Market for the last 16 years. There is nothing healthy and affordable in the area. I had high hopes for Darnell's place, but just don't see a place with that price point making it. Plus, seafood can be polarizing. I'm $18-20 for lunch on the low end without a drink.

I would bet on success! From my branding and sales experience, (a) there's a surprising amount of disposable income in the general area, (b) area residents eat significantly more seafood than do residents in more "ritzy" parts of town, and (c) there is no question in my mind but that Darnell has the pulse of his customers.

Plus, if you look at the pricing of the dozen or so Cajun/Vietnamese places in town he's really not out of sight price-wise, especially as the most expensive items on his menu are meant to be shared (one meal includes 4 lobster tails, 2 lbs crab legs, etc.).

My guess is that he'll more than make his expenses from the neighborhood trade, and if he attracts the East Side crowd he's looking for there'll be no need to pass the hat.

I hope you are correct. I just don't see it being a huge lunch destination due to the price point. The 25 people in my office that is feet away were so excited to see a nice restaurant coming into the area. Once they saw the menu the excitement went away.

They seemed to be pretty busy today. I'm not sure if it was a friends and family soft opening or what was going on.

The meal with 4 lobster tails and crabs legs is $300.

Nailed it, $28. Frankly, it looks worth it to me. The $12 lunch option of 8 shrimp, corn, and potatoes could be a decent deal, but I think he could use more a few more affordable/smaller lunch options, but with a range of options in the teens, I think the dinner looks fine. A friend made her first trip to the Seafood Lady and was very disappointed in the value per dollar, will have to see about this one.

I don't worry about the $50 wings -- that's a gimmick to draw the likes of Guy Fieri when he's in town filming. :D

So, has anyone tried this place yet? Im following them on FB and their postings look so luscious its really tempting me. Still. the hike from Crestwood to Russelville (and home again after a big meal) Maybe I'm just getting old and persnickety about those kind of adventures. Anybody made a venture yet?

Looked great!
