One thing I was able to enjoy last summer was the gradual reopening of bourbon distilleries in the area. Willet didn't have any tours when I stopped by. But their restaurant and gift shop were open. I just had a coffee but was able to walk through the restaurant and the building in which it is housed.
Let me first say that I hadn't been on the grounds for quite a few years. I first visited them when they had just opened for tours. There was no restaurant and the place was pretty raw as visitation goes. Now the place has a beautiful building that reminds me of Decca with the type of architectural style, and with diners inside and out. As is the case with most bourbon distilleries in the hinterland, it draws young, hip people from around the region. The setting alone is worth the drive. This food review makes it that much more appealing..... and by the way, Heaven Hill, which is about a mile up the road, has undergone a huge expansion to their visitor and dining experience. This would be a nice 1-2 punch for an afternoon.
