W.W. Cousins shoutout

by Carla G » Tue Dec 22, 2020 9:03 am

It would seem I don’t get around St. Matthews as much as I used to.
I was craving a good burger in that area and I thought of WWCousins but wasn’t sure how they were faring during the pandemic. It would seem quite well. They’ve added their own makeshift drive thru (like REALLY makeshift but it works!) and while pulling their menu up on line I noticed that they had been sold by the Wells company and were now 100% employee owned. I ordered a simple 1/3 pound burger meal at the drive thru, pulled around and only had to wait a few minutes for my made to order burger. It was great! Fries were big steak fries and very hot. The whole thing with tip was only a couple dollars more than a chain drive thru would have been and the food was far superior.
So happy they’ve found a way to adapt.

I remember seeing their makeshift drive through on social media when in-person dining was completely shut down, and thinking how neat it looked. I don't think I've eaten there since I was a kid, I should probably swing by and grab a burger.

On a recent weekend randomly driving around listening to podcasts (quarantine entertainment for me), I found myself in Bloomington, IN, and attempted to fulfill a White Castle craving. I ordered four sliders with mustard. Imagine my horror when I discovered that they use yellow mustard instead of the brown Dusseldorf mustard the local White Castle franchises use! Savages!

 That's wrong, I tellya! Wrong! Although when we lived in Queens, I quit going to the WC in Long Island City when I figured out the reason why they tasted strangely sweet was that they threw ketchup on the grill while cooking them.

Because of this review, and the news (to me) that it is employee owned, I went by late this afternoon, first time in over a decade. The makeshift description of the drive-thru is apt! I was wondering how they would handle their salad bar of toppings and sauces, but they have sensibly slimmed down the choices to adapt to this era.

Anyway, an excellent burger -- clearly fresh, piled high with toppings, and piping hot, as I like it. The total cost for the full meal w/fries and drink was $10.25. As noted, a few bucks more than other options, but well worth it; much cheaper than a fave like Grind, but they are closed until the end of January, so this will be a choice in the month ahead, and beyond. I do recall a decline from their heyday (toppings bar got, um, messy, especially during family hour), glad to see the employees that now own it upped the quality.

Only quibble: No napkins. I didn't ask, but should be automatic in these times, luckily I had some in the car. It was a teenager who handed me the bag, so I'll cut her some slack and be sure to ask next time. Nice to see WWC back on track.

I've gone the opposite way. When I pick up, I don't eat in the car (but I never have in my car), and I don't ask for utensils or napkins (and if I remember, I ask for them to be left out). It's both COVID paranoia (because it's one less thing handled or breathed on) and a way to try to help restaurants reduce expenses (less stock items to replenish). I have my own napkins and wipes and sanitizer.

I feel the same way about eating in the car, Ron. I don't worry too much about touching the utensils (wash hands, sanitize, don't touch face), but I just don't need them because we have nicer utensils and our own paper napkins at home.

This post makes me so happy! WWC was always my go-to burger place in Louisville. Factor in the kids eat free night they used to have, and we spent a lot of time there when my kids were little. I just want a good, fat, juicy burger cooked to order- I'm not a huge fan of gourmet burger places where the emphasis is on the fancy toppings, rather than the greasy burger :-P Add in steak fries with vinegar, and a chocolate malt, and I was in heaven. I'm glad they found a way to make take-out work for them!

I'm glad I'm not alone in this. I used to eat in the car in college, and in my early work days, but when I got my new 2011 dream car, it stopped. Probably because of all the ancient fries and general grossness I found under the seats when I cleaned my previous car to sell.

Ha! We've always had compacts or sub-compacts, so eating behind the wheel is just plain uncomfortable. Plus I don't like wearing crumbs when I get out of the car.

I'm kind of a slob at heart. So I'll eat as my impulses dictate!

I like the fries under the seat remark. It reminds me of the Morgan Spurlock "Supersize Me" movie that came out a number of years ago. He shed revelatory light on the reality of a frankenfood composition of a french fry.

Fair points. I do not normally eat in the car, but I don't live near there, but I'm admittedly overly picky about foods that do not "travel well", imo. Burgers and tacos (don't retain heat well with cool things on top, unless separated) and most breakfast foods (turns to mush when reheated) top the list. But reducing their expenses is a good point, can always bring my own napkin -- I'll put it next to the salt grinder in my glove compartment. :D
