Incredibly sad news: Bim Deitrich has died.

by Len Stevens » Fri Aug 28, 2020 10:55 am

One of the true heroes of this business locally passed away last night. Bim Deitrich passed on. When you look at who flowed from his restaurant tree, it truly is breathtaking! He was simply a maestro both personally and professionally...he will be missed.

Incredibly sad news: Bim Deitrich has died.

by Nora Boyle » Fri Aug 28, 2020 11:04 am

That’s awful! I’d gotten used to chatting w him on my way into work while he enjoyed his coffee at P&T. His poor family must be devastated. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Incredibly sad news: Bim Deitrich has died.

by Robin Garr » Fri Aug 28, 2020 11:29 am

So sad, Len. Thank you for sharing this terrible news. Bim was one of the great ones ... every one of his restaurants was crazy popular, and yet he always remained a kind gentleman. He will be truly missed.

I'm going to edit the headline so people will know what's in the thread. Otherwise I'm afraid some might miss it.

What were his restaurants, for those of us who are just learning about him now?

I'm trying to remember all the restaurants that Bim operated, Iggy. I come up with:
Myra's
Langtry's
Dietrich's in the Crescent
Allo Spiedo
RED Lounge
Primo
Am I missing any? Was he one of the crew at the original Bristol?

Brasserie Dietrich's was another one. My personal favorite, actually.

Brasserie Deitrich = Deitrich's in the Crescent after a name change. I loved it, too, and it really chaps me to see a little bank in that space now.

I was thinking it had a previous name, but I couldn't recall it. I loved that old theater vibe, with the kitchen like a stage.

I am genuinely sorrowful hearing this. I worked with him at Langtry’s years ago. He was so generous with sharing what he knew. I learned more about the restaurant business from him than any other mentor I worked with. His restaurants were wonderful. This is a real loss to the industry.

Yes, the original crew was Doug Gossman, Tim Martin and Bim.

Thanks for posting, Len. That is very sad. I learned of this today from the proprietor of Vines on Douglass, where Bim contributed briefly. He knew a lot about wine and taught me stuff when we visited Primo and then, later, at Vines. He was the consummate host.

Wow, great memory!

Was RED Lounge where Varanese is now??

Langtry’s aka Langtry’s Roadhouse on Shelbyville Road near Hurstbourne - now a flower shop.
Dietrich’s in the old Crescent Theatre a couple doors down Frankfort Avenue from Blue Dog Bakery and now a bank. It was such a cool place
Allo Spiedo on Frankfort, too and now Vint Coffee
Primo on Market Street, later to be Mozz, then Wild Rita’s Mexican (now vacant methinks)

Maybe others can fill in more details.

Wow. Seeing Bim's name and Allo Spiedo brings back a flood of memories. What a legacy he leaves.

Myra’s shared a building and parking lot with Burger’s Market right off Lexington. The first place I ever ate soft shelled crabs.

Yes, tho it still looked like the garage it was, complete with unfinished floors and service bays!
