Get your sushi on the go from ToGo Sushi

Like all the maki rolls at ToGo Sushi, the basic tuna roll is oversize and packed full.

One of the great pleasures of sushi for me is the opportunity to sit down at the sushi bar, admire the artfully arranged rows of beautifully cut seafood and fish, and talk with the chef about what’s interesting and good.

But I have to be honest: During the pandemic, the idea of joining a few neighbors and a chef or two in such close quarters does not appeal, not even with masks and social distancing in play.

Happily, many of the city’s sushi bars offer a takeout option. But one stands out: ToGo Sushi, as its name implies, does most of its business – you guessed it – to go.

Thanks to the drive-through window that this three-year-old Lyndon eatery inherited from its predecessor, Bruster's Ice Cream, you can go through the drive-through line that circles the little red-and-white building to pick up a phoned-in order, or make your choice through a fast-food-style speaker.

Although ToGo’s focus is takeout, there is a short sushi bar and a few tables inside, so in theory you could go in and pull up a seat in front of the chefs and say "feed me."

But drive-through seems to be a better idea right now, and our lunch order proved well-made and tasty. The price for four rolls and a salad ended up under $40, which isn't bad for sushi. Indeed, although sushi isn’t known as cheap eats, ToGo’s prices are more competitive with Kroger sushi than the city’s fancier sushi shops. Connected through ownership with Louisville’s Oishii Sushi and Samurai Sushi & Hibachi, ToGo brings a solid heritage to its sushi game.

The menu consists entirely of maki sushi (rolls) and an array of Japanese-style appetizers. For the familiar nigiri sushi (bites of fish formed atop a ball of rice) you’ll have to look elsewhere.

You’ve got plenty of rolls to choose from, though, nearly 70 of them, subdivided among specialty rolls, regular rolls, vegetable rolls, cooked rolls and deep-fried rolls. Enhancing the value further, these rolls are big, perhaps twice the size of grocery sushi. ...

It's one of the few places where the pictures on their website accurately portray the rolls! What you see is what you get...

If I am not mistaken they are owned by the same folks that own Oishii Sushi (at least that's what I learned when the To Go place first opened). The quality seems to reflect that!

Correct! I think I buried that info somewhere deep in the full review, but in my mind, the extra-large construction of most of the rolls gives away the Oishii connection. Also a third shop that I haven't tried, Samurai Sushi & Hibachi in Middletown.

I was there not long after they opened and really enjoyed my meal. After your review I thought I’d checkout their menu again and noticed it had changed. Now there seemed to be a bunch of rolls with what is noted as “sp. crab” . Is that the fake stuff? I’m thinking it is and that’s OK if you like it but I don’t. Unfortunately some of their best sounding combinations include it. I wonder how they would feel about ordering a roll and asking them to omit it? Also they don’t denote what kind of roe they typically use. Wonder if any of it is salmon roe? I really want to return there but I don’t want to create a jam at the drive thru with all my pestering questions.

Good questions, Carla. Looking carefully at the menu, I think "sp" is attached to "Inside-sp" rather than to the food that follows. I'm all but certain that it's surimi (fake crab) because even the California Roll shows "crab," and California roll never has the real thing. You could try asking them if they'd leave it out, just to see what they way.

A lot of the dishes, including our Dragon Roll, specifically mention tobiko, which is flying fish roe, and what we got was excellent: Tiny spheres that pop when you bite them.

The happy roll is my favorite! And such a good deal for the size of the roll you get.

For whatever it's worth, I thought "sp" was spicy (fake) crab! Seems to fit!

Finally made it by the other day. It was an off time (3pm) but there were still 2 cars ahead of me. I got the Green City roll and it was wonderful! Perhaps one of the chunkiest rolls I’ve ever gotten, absolutely packed with tuna and salmon and a generous amount of roe on top.
Delicious!
