Our directory of Black-owned restaurants in Louisville

During the pandemic, your meal is brought out to the front porch of LuCretia's quarters in the ChefSpace building at 1812 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.
Image

Here is our preliminary list of as many Black-owned restaurants as we could find in Louisville. Please give them your support!

The list is compiled from our own records, bolstered by lists assembled by social-media friends. You should be able to quickly find more information by searching the restaurant names on Facebook or your favorite search engine; in coming days we’ll also work to provide links and additional information.

Please let us know if you would like to suggest corrections, additions or deletions.

Mike, sadly, not as many as I wish I could, but when I upgrade the listing to include live links and contacts over coming days, I'll also link to reviews for those I have.

Robin, I think putting this list together is a disservice to the restaurant community. When people go to restaurants they shouldn't be going to 1 because it's black-owned, white owned, Asian owned etc. I should be going to the one that has the type and quality of food they are looking for.

Robin, thank you for going to all the effort to put this great list together. I'm unfamiliar with some of these places and can't wait to check 'em out.

Mark, I think that your post is a disservice to decent people who would like to specifically support a marginalized community during a turbulent time.

But I suppose that we are all entitled to our own beliefs.

Um, didn’t you mean to add “all lives matter?”

No, people should consider whatever they choose. This list is appreciated and will be considered by many (a similar one was in the CJ awhile back). If you want to ignore such considerations, that is your right.

For the record, I didn't see that and definitely didn't "borrow" it. I did use with permission a list posted on social media by an African-American activist friend and added more places that I knew about or found by searching, hoping to make as comprehensive a roster as possible. I suppose I ought to look at the CJ list and see if they had anything I missed. Do you know about when it ran, Silvio?

Certainly not a problem, I've seen a few lists floating around, all for a good purpose. Link is here, first published a year ago, but updated on June 8:

Nice job, Robin.

I stopped at Galan's for lunch about 2 weeks ago when poking around on the west side. I got there before they opened so I was able to meet and speak with Carlos Galan for about 10-15 minutes. He is from Cuba and is determined to not only continue with their two locations along Market St, but is planning to expand. He is appreciative of the support he has received in the area. I had a Cuban sandwich, congri and cafe con leche (actually 2 cafes). They also have breakfast food and typical diner/grill fare. Good prices that coincide with the product.

I told him he was going to be the next Fernando. He beamed with pride. He is an impressive young man with a vision and cojones to go with it....... remember, you first read it here folks! ..ha, ha...

In addition to considering lists like this, I think it's worth favoring restaurants that avoid another historical restaurant trend -- people of color in the back of the house, but not the front. If I visit a place in the future and see this, only white people out front, I think it would be worth calling over a manager, asking why, and consider taking my business elsewhere if the answer is unsatisfactory. The size of the place may be a factor, different for a place with two servers vs. twenty. But so does effort. Step into Superchefs, and it is clear that they have made one. I hope that other owners will try to make that effort, not just black-owned places.

Good point, Silvio. I can't say I've never been served by a server of color, but you're right, it's not common and not in proportion to population.
