Who's got the city's best burger? Why do you think so?

by Robin Garr » Fri Jun 12, 2020 4:54 pm

For an upcoming article: What restaurant do you think makes the city's best hamburger? Why do you say so?

Not sure if they're still open, but WW Cousins was always my go to for a great burger.
Meat well flavored, greasy, and cooked to order. I can't stand a dry burger.
Toasted buns
So may different toppings to choose from

During quarantine we did A LOT of takeout from Texas Roadhouse out here (I know, a chain- but Colorado Springs is NOT a foodie city like Louisville). The only reason we got it so much is because I randomly chose a burger from them the first time we ordered to go and it was so incredibly good it kept me coming back for more.

Here's some of my favorites:

Bristol
Ditto's
Rafferty's

Just really good burgers.

I know they are a barbecue restaurant but Mark's Feedstore had a pretty good burger!

I like Cousins, but in addition:

Smokey Bones had a great "make your own" burger, but right now (with 33% seating and a more limited menu) I do not recommend it (went recently for it, and while the burger came out cooked as requested the toppings/bun/et al were not great (they were out of several toppings, and for others had skimpy portions unlike previous trips).

Drake's has several special burgers which are uniformly very good!

Brick House is another chain, but it's a step above. Their burgers are worthwhile, and the apps (for example) instead of hot chicken wings includes orange glazed duck wings! Fun place!

Game and Hammerheads make good burgers.

I don't want to forget Mussels & Burger Bar, but personally I think the others have come up and surpassed them!

Fun topic, I'll play.

Fancy:
LeMoo. Massively decadent The kind of burger that makes you wonder how it will fit in your mouth.
Monnik: Their beef blend is great. Their burgers are on the simpler side, compared to LeMoo, but equally tasty.

Diner:
Shady Lane Cafe. Still as good as when Bill was cooking them. Straight-up old school, flat-top classic. Kind of like a BLT in that any additions/subtractions would just mess it up.
Six Forks: A relatively new entrant to my burger universe but they do it right. Their Butchers Select burger, with a Pat LaFrieda short rib/brisket blend patty is legit, and worth the up-charge, IMO.

Sliders:
Oskar's: Just delicious little sliders, with the perfect crispy edges. What's more to say?

Category all it's own:
The Ollieburger. Come on, how can you not mention them when you are talking about Louisville burgers?

ETA: I reserve the right to add other places when I think about them. I know I'm forgetting some.

I don’t see getting a burger as any sort of dining treat for me
BUT
I can think of two times when I did get a burger that it was extremely satisfying. Once was at Mussels and Burgers and the other was Old Chicago ( I know, I know, still it was really good.)

Eiderdown used to have one of my favorites. Holy Grale had my absolute favorite. I think my favorite is Game’s, now.

Grind is my #1 -- flavorful, cooked well, locally owned and sourced. I also don't like burgers too thick or overflowing, one that I can eat with my hands from start to finish. Grind fits the bill on all counts.

I love it too, Silvio. Last time I was there, I wished that they had been more specific about provenance than generic "grass-fed," but that's still better than "CAFO."

Oh my goodness, how could I forget Cottage Cafe! Theirs is very simple, but very good. They use a taco seasoning sauce/mayo on it, which is a nice surprise.
