Food Trucks

by SilvioM » Thu Apr 16, 2020 6:09 pm

I'm not a big food truck guy, but I figure that they are also suffering given the number of festivals, neighborhood fairs, and flea-offs that are not taking place. I'd like to try a few in these times, but I only see them randomly, often after I've eaten. So....

1. What is the best way to find FTs? Is there a central site, or does one have to go to the FB pages or some other source?
2. Does anyone have any favorites that are currently operating? I suspect that many are shut down, but I've seen a few in my neighborhood in the past few weeks. Thanks for any info.

Here's a pretty good list of local food trucks, Silvio, but keeping up with where they are is a bigger challenge. I've found that looking up favorites on Twitter is often the quickest way to find specific trucks.

Also, Leah S of the forum is involved with the Louisville Food Truck Association, which covers member food trucks but not an exhaustive selection:

It appears that their current approach is to encourage neighborhood and community groups to arrange for a food truck to come by.

I keep up with my favorites on Instagram mostly.

Smok'N Cantina is a favorite:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B-n0NcsFTE5/
They have been doing meals that serve 2-3 people. Order one day and pickup the next or they will deliver if you order a couple and hit the minimum. They took this week off but will be back next week.

Hot Buns food truck is another:

They do downtown, hospital area for lunches quite a bit. Looks like they are hitting up a neighborhood for dinner tonight (Poplar Lakes?) and will be downtown tomorrow night at waterfront park? Lists River Road & Witherspoon Streets

Black Rock Grill
https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KMogDluQU/
Also does downtown hospital area for lunch a lot (Preston/Chesnut Streets)

I have other favorites that do mostly events/catering rather than out on the streets and no idea what those folks are going to do :(

I see the Celtic Pig set up during the day in the parking lot of the Sullivan Bakery.

Yes, I'm definitely involved with the food trucks.

Our members post their location on Louisville Food Truck Association on Facebook. Please like and follow us.

Celtic Pig will likely continue to be at The Bakery lot for quite a while.
We are sending out trucks to neighborhoods, apartment communities, and the occasional office building who still has workers.
Some trucks are still on the streets and you will likely find them in the medical center area during the week, as that's where people are working.
I'd guestimate that the majority of trucks have sidelined, hoping to wait this out.
At least four can do contactless delivery.
One has switched to pre-packaged meal delivery.

I'm constantly looking for the owners of shuttered property in high visibility areas who will let us park a truck in their lot until the business reopens. Sullivan graciously agreed to let LFTA use The Bakery lot in support of us. But I need more lots! I've been turned down by a church and a multi-location office corp. Others just don't answer. I'll take any help from an owner of a shuttered property. We can give you a COI.

We're hurting. Winter is always our down season, and we didn't get a Spring. We may not get a summer either if this shutdown continues. If your HOA, neighborhood or apartment community wants to host a food truck, please email me at LouisvilleFoodTruckAssociation@gmail.com

Thanks for your support.

The biggest problem is to know where the trucks are on any given day. Is there any listing.

Ron, at this point, it's hard to participate in society if you don't use Facebook, but are you willing to consider Twitter as an alternative? You could create a Twitter account and follow your favorite food trucks. If you didn't use it for anything else, you'd be able to keep pretty decent track.

Good point, Heather! You still have to search and find your favorites, or try this hashtag:
https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/ ... oodtrucks/

It wouldn't surprise me, though, if even more of them are using Instagram than Twitter now. Either one, or FB, is probably as practical a way as any for keeping up.

Ron, how about Instagram? Is it on your no-go list?

Um, sorry Robin, but I just can't let this pass unchallenged. I'm guessing Ron participates in society quite well sans Facebook, as do I. Yes, Facebook and other social media platforms serve valid functions, and are generally a boon to society. But, they are not wholly benign players in today's media landscape. Facebook's issues are well-documented, so I won't belabor that point. I recognize that I may be over-reacting here, but I just don't like the whiff of condescension toward those who choose not to utilize specific social media platforms.

Steve, I have to agree with Robin on this 1. Yes, Facebook has its downsides but it also has some redeeming factors. Food trucks, like any business needs the most exposure they can possibly get and in this day and age Facebook is 1 of the bigger audiences. You may not like it but it can still help your business which is obviously a good thing.

But how does the lack of a Facebook account make it difficult to participate in society? Trust me, people do fine without having an account. We can still pull up commercial Facebook accounts, so that channel is still open. Perhaps I'm splitting hairs because you could say I still "use" Facebook, despite not having an account. I'll give you that.
